+1 on the SCR-DI, but I have heard a lot of good tones out of the MXR M80 and M81 too

I keep forgetting about the M81. My guitar player has one and he likes it. I may have to give that a whirl next time at rehearsal.

To add to the mix, there's a Spaceman Effects Redstone preamp for sale here (no affiliation) for $200 you may want to check out. There's also the Darkglass Harmonic Booster you could pick up for around $160. Both of these add a little (Darkglass) to a lot (Spaceman) of grit/harmonics. Good luck, DM

Give a Serious look at the new Origin Effects Bass Rig Super Vintage(SVT inspired) and the 64(vintage Fender Inspired). They have identical features, DI Cab Sim, Overdrive, Blend, tone controls etc.. And they sound fantastic from the videos Ive seen.

Here's my ampless rig for rock. If you're playing just through the PA and it's 18" subwoofers out front it's nice to have control of bass, mids and treble, especially bass. It can get wooly out front if you're not careful. The cab simulator gives you more feel through the PA. How are you going to monitor your bass? IEM, floor monitor or both?

I typically go through a small floor monitor. I'd prefer to use IEMs, but that's an uphill struggle for another day.

So I ended up buying a Tech 21 SH1 off Amazon. Everyones recommendations for a Sansamp (VT, Programmable, BDDI, Ged, Dug) sounded like the ticket. Frankly, I just wanted to try it but the nearest T21 dealer to me is over 100mi away in Canada, so Ol' Jeff the space cowboy got my business.

First I just want to say it's a fantastic pedal. I bought it because I wanted a footswitchable gain, had a tuner and seemed squarely aimed at what I look for tonewise (big tube head, with some grind and some cab noise). It does all of that, easily nails the Harris tone as well as Geezer. The Phil Lynott setting that kinda sold me on the pedal was spot on perfect.

I did send it back and I will say why: the controls on this are extremely sensitive. This is definitely a versatile pedal, in that it can literally give you so many perfect classic rock tones. I even got a damn good Rudy Sarzo/Quiet Riot esqe 80's tone. I took it to rehearsal and it took me 10 minutes to dial it back in despite having taken a pic of my settings. You can very easily get lost with all the choice this thing can give you. That coupled with it not having a dry meant it wasn't what I was looking for. Amazing pedal just the same.

Ive decided that for now I'll put my old m81 back in service. I can get a great tone out of it that isn't too dissimilar from the EBS Reidmar I usually play through so on gigs where an amp isn't feasible this will do the job for now.
