Preamp --> Power Amp --> Cab Rigs?

After 10yrs using a Mesa Mpulse600, I've finally upgraded to a Pre + Power setup. Blown away by the tone improvement so far....

Jule Monique -> Crest Pro7200 -> Bergantino CN212

Apologies for the fuzzy pic....

IF so, how do they sound? What are the pros, and what are the cons? What rigs do you have? etc.

They sound mostly like whatever I build them to sound like. :cool:

Pros: see above. Cons: bigger than my typical gigging cab, if I use all of this stuff.

From bottom up:
1000 watt plate amp w/DSP.
Passinwind 5B solid state preamp, Baxandall EQ.
Lexicon MPX-550 verb/delay
Ashly DPX-200 channel strip, preamp, parametric EQ, compressor.
Passinwind 6B tube preamp, active/passive EQ hybrid.

The bottom preamp has an EFX/Aux input channel which lets me run the other pieces in series or parallel with it. That could be especially useful for doubling on BG and electric upright.

You carry all that stuff Charlie???

Of course not Paul, I am slackerdom incarnate. :cool:

The stuff in the center case actually handles vocals fine for duo gigs or especially rehearsals, so it replaces my 20 channel mixer in some cases. The tube preamp is a total luxury, I like the SS one every bit as much. But like the music I play, I tend to do something a little different each time with gear choices. To me that's the fun of rack rigs, having interchangeable building blocks.

Been using Pre-poweramp rigs for years this is my latest , Ampeg SVP-CL preamp and Crown XLS1500 . The preamp I had before this was a Sansamp RBI , great preamp . The thing I like about pre-poweramp rigs is good clean power for not much money and the ability to change your tone by just changing out the pre , not the whole amp . Poweramps are much lighter than they used to be , my Ampeg pre weighs more than my Crown poweramp .

Here's a pic of my old rack , RBI pre and Crown XTI1000.

Looking to get my own similar rig put together. Got a VT Bass DI on the way, looking to nab a power amp to drive some full range speakers so I can use the speaker emulation on the VT Bass DI when desired. Any recommendations for a power amp / cabinet setup? I've been looking at 2x12's with tweeters. Want to strike the best possible compromise between portability, loudness, and tone.
