Preamp Rack or Pedal

I'll probably go used if I can find what I am looking for in that market. I have no budget per se, but I probably don't want to spend more than 150 (pedal) or 200 (rack). I have no expectations regarding the eq. I am pretty flexible in terms of parametric or band, and I am playing a Zon into a GK 410RBH, I shouldn't need to do too much beyond a little stage dialing...

There's a lot of good choices out there now a days. Seems like a lot if makers are seeing the benefits, relatively speaking, in a preamp, specifically a preamp in pedal form. I personally have used and owned the VT bass and BDDI by sansamp. Great pre's. they will go back on my big board once it's complete. But I took them off my existing board to make room for my B7K. I absolutely love my B7K and I'll never get rid of it. Never. All these have DI, the VT only on the deluxe version, a new VT DI soon to be released, and the BDDI and B7K both have ground lift. Not sure if the VT deluxe does or not but I think the VT DI will. I'd take the VT and B7K over the BDDI any day. But I'd take the B7K over both the other day all day if I had to choose just one. There's tons of preamp pedals out there, good luck!!

I've tried all the Tech 21 stuff and the pedal don't drive some power amps very well, especially if you want to use unity gain so you can switch pedals. The do make quality products though. I ended up prefer my BDDI over the VT though. I did send it off to Mike Putnam an have him add a mid control so It's more like an RBI in a box. I can get it to sound pretty close to my SVP-Pro to my ears. Not exact, but close. So when I want to travel light, I leave the rack and cabs at home and run direct to FOH.

What's a B7K, precious? (sorry, just watched the hobbit...)

I wanna see the hobbit, looks like a good one. Anyway, the B7K is a preamp/dist/OD stompbox that has so many tonal options its ridiculous. In a very good way mind you. It's made by darkglass. I could go on and explain but if you have google and Internet access, darkglass or many others can explain what this pedal does much better than I. I can tell you what it does for me though. I have a chain of about 8 effects and I run the 7 last, so I can use it as a preamp. It's an amazing piece of bass lovin equipment. Mine is always on.

Was a bit of a mess compared to the LOTR movies, but still a lot of fun.

That thing looks sick, but it's probably overkill for what I need (both in price and features). I really like the sound of my bass, so I don't need all of that, lol.

Well then what are you trying to accomplish with a preamp? The blend knob on the B7K is a godsend. It's the most intuitive pedal I've ever had end pleasure of owning/using. I'm not really an endorser of darkglass stuff. I just really really love their products. Doug and the boys at darkglass really know what they're doing over there.

if you have the money and want to stay in the mid 100's then sansamp bddi or the mxr m-80 are both great! i usually dont recommend cheap products, in fact id never turn someone on to something that i thought was crap but the bdi21 from behringer is not terrible, in fact it works really well. i notice very little of a difference between it and the sansamp. follow this link to find out more info about it. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/behringer-bdi21-866132/
