Preamp recommendation for SUB Stingray

Hello all,

I've come to the conclusion that I need to replace the preamp on my SUB Stingray, as it doesn't have enough headroom and I am not a fan of how the EQ controls work. I have an Ibanez SR306EB (also a budget bass) which has a TMB preamp working off a single 9V battery, and it is way better in all respects. No headroom issues even when playing hard on the low strings, and the EQ controls are more intuitive than the Stingray design (IMO).

So, if the Ibanez preamp was available for separate purchase, I would be happy to install it in my Stingray as well. I am not ready to drop in excess of $200 on a Nordstrand or Aguilar preamp for this bass, however. I am hoping someone has experiences with other, cheaper designs that would nevertheless be an improvement over the stock preamp.

See anything of promise in the TB classifieds? There's no telling how a new pre will interact with the stock pick-ups.

I own ray4 and I found headroom issue from stock pup rather than stock preamp.

I have cheap china made mm pup match pretty well with stock preamp. Full treble has no such terrible harsh tone like stock pup and no crazy distorted E string problem too.

This china pup has well balance string to string output and better definition in tonewise compare to stock pup and GFS pup.
