Precision- Hway 1 or RW?

Hi,

Hey, what did the Tasmanian guy who started this thread ultimately decide to get - I missed that?

Regards,

joHn

I haven't decided yet! :rollno: I'm still 'up in the air' re these 3 basses. (I'm throwing the MIM P-bass special in there-as it's going for a great $$ & it feels darn nice!- that one I CAN try)
I WILL inform U when I DO decide, but am stuck as of the moment...:crying:

Good idea. Will sleep on this. Still wanna know re the GREASEBUCKET thang tho!

As you must have read, it's supposed to cut the highs without adding more lows.

What does this mean? I guess it would be different to each person but, you know that "thickening" that happens to the tone when you roll off the highs on the tone knob? That doesn't happen as much with the greasbucket. To my ears it makes the tone sound thinner.

Personally, I don't like the greasbucket & I prefer the "thickening" only because it's what I've known for years and what I expect to happen when I roll off the highs on the tone knob.

Agreed, the Greasebucket keeps the low end a bit more consistant. Although, I would replace it in the Highway One...

I have just picked up a Road Worn Precision. It is one of the best Precisions I have ever owned(including MIA, Custom Shop, Vintage). I would easily take it over a Highway One. They feel great, and are generally very light weight as well. They are as close to the "real thing" as I have played without spending thousands of dollars.

I stopped into L&M this afternoon and A-B'd the Highway One P and the Roadworn P. I had a hard time putting the Roadworn back, and had an equally hard time keeping the H1 in my hands. I played them both through a Traynor 400H (I think - the one with the tube preamp) and an Ampeg 410 (dunno which one). EQ set at 12:00, tube preamp on, no contour or mid scoop.

The RW has *it*. Perfect tone, perfect feel. I played Rescue Me for about five minutes, Brown Eyed Girl, Mustang Sally, some walking bass lines over the "So What" changes, and some random grooves in various places on the neck. It was *really* addictive. If it were a two tone sunburst, I probably would have shelled out the $1200, Christmas and pending divorce be damned. :bassist:

The H1, a new model, to be honest, sounded very thin and trebly in comparison. The tone on both was rolled off to about 1 or 2, which is where I usually play my P bass. I couldn't stand the way it sounded, sorry. It sounded "cheap" if that makes sense.

I assume both basses ship with 7250s installed; they were both about the same age, and in stock for about the same amount of time. It's possible that the H1 hasn't been played as much though, so the difference in tone *could* have been the strings. But I don't believe it.

If I can find one of these RW's used somewhere, I think I'll snag it up, depending on the deal. I just wish they weren't Fiesta Red. Or Salmon, or Coral, or Pink, whatever you wanna call it. :hmm:

Hi,
Nice. My sentiments exactly. I also liked the lightness of the instrument - the other fenders seem bulky and heavy by comparison.
Go for the sunburst model - get one as new on ebay for about $800. The limited colour choices are because they are modelled on the orginal 50s p basses I guess. I'd like to see a comparison with a 57 Reissue. In terms of colour I wish they offered a Daphne Blue or a Shoreline Gold.

I'm also putting a set of aftermarket pickups in Dimarzios. I am reliably told this inexpensive modification absolutely transforms the sound of the roadworns - which I already think is pretty decent.

JoHn

Thanx all for the reviews etc... All VERY helpful & I think I made the right choice in grabbing a 50's RW Precision.
She arrived last Fri, & I had 3 gigs over the weekend. After I put a set of (used) Fender Nylon Tapewounds on & did a set up, 1st gig I wasn't very impressed! But I think it was the strings...... I liked the weight/feel etc but the strings sounded too dull & rubbery :-/
So, next day I stuck the orig. strings back on & used it again that night(in same band-playing classic rock mainly)- Loved it this time & used it all night!!
Kept it the same for the Sun. eve jazz/blues style gig & loved it again. I was also complimented on the tone by a couple of ppl.
Will post some pix asap

Thanx again to all the offered opinions/reviews etc. Appreciate it!
