Precision people, how would you rate this one, looks-wise?

You can get them, but it isn't cancer causing chemicals. I mean, I live in California and literally everything comes with a cancer warning...
Seriously, the problem is cellulose is harder to work with than modern plastics, or more to the point it is different to work so requires different processes. And it shrinks, and warps, and has other little fussinesses.
Most mass-production plastics places will do tons of more modern plastic laminates, which are more stable and work better with their machines and processes. These laminates aren't just used for guitars, they're for everything. So making a "tortie" looking sheet is no big deal since it uses the same vinyl or PVC or whatever that they pump out for everything else, just in a different color. Switching to bakelite or celluloid or whatever vintage material is a big deal, and the market is much smaller, so you see less of those materials. Especially in stock, mass-produced guitars.
It's just market size and price point, really.
A very nice traditional P - classic for that time period. That said, you can see by my profile that I prefer a non-standard pickguard on my P.

I like the Spitfire tort, it's different from the old stuff, but still very nice.
I just don't like the religious fervour and preaching that goes with them.
Spitfires are super pricey, right? I actually like the idea of leaving an instrument stock, like it is. But I know there's a high chance I'll change my mind on that one day or another...

If it means anything to you, I'd also "vote" for keeping it stock. AVRIs are really nice instruments. They may be a good modding platform, but I think it'd be a shame getting rid of the really nice parts. Sure, you could find a better, higher-quality pickup or a modern bridge, but I think that'd be kind of missing the point of owning an AVRI.
Of course, that's just, like, my (perhaps unwelcome or overly conservative) opinion, man
The bass looks great, and it probably feels and plays the same. I can't tell from the thread whether you're a P guy but, if not, watch out: I was converted via an AVRI.
The only mods I ever wanted to make on my AmStd were covers and a vintage pickup, so if I like the AVRI I know I won't change these things.
Oh I'm a precision-person all right. My holy trinity of bass players is Jamerson-Kaye-Dunn. There's a lot more, but this is my original trio. So the only bass I ever wanted was a sb P-bass
And then maybe, if I ever get the money and the gigs, an Epiphone Rivoli & a 4001 Fireglo to satisfy my everlasting love of British rock.
So I'm as old-school as it can get. But I'm probably younger than most people here, so I guess it balances things out!

maybe he needed an extra plate? ask him to send pics of body, neck pocket, and bottom of pups to check for serial numbers.

I have a 1962 clay dot rosewood fret board that was sunburst I bought in 1968 when the metal flak guitars came out I sanded it down to be in the times, that was the dumbest thing I have ever done. It looks great leave it be.
Those 2013 American Vintage reissues are excellent .Generally the tort should have a "warmer" red hue , the Fullerton version was more in that direction.
I *love* the strap button on the back of the headstock! Sure don't see that on modern basses.
I actually have a 2013 American Standard exactly like that one and I love it. It plays great with a really smooth feel to it and the I was able to tinker with the set up and the action is low and doesnt buzz at all and I am not easy on the strings while playing. I love vintage stuff so the look is right down my alley. Wish I had an original '63!
You MUST change the Pickguard to a nice nitro material with the nice reds/yellow and make sure it is made with the wide 60's bevel on the edge. It will make that Bass pop!
