Is there any reason why Fender makes a Precision with PJ pickup configs but doesn't make a Jazz with PJ config? I like the feel of a Jazz body and neck over the Precision, but want the best of both worlds for pickups. Are there any other brands that make a good Jazz with PJ?

There's the Aerodyne. There's also some kind of special edition MIJ jazz with PJ pickups. I forget what it's called. I've only ever seen it in red. Why Fender doesn't make them regularly? Lack of demand, probably.

Yeah that's the one I meant. They're great basses. My Sam Ash was selling one for something like 1200.
Not a bad price considering, not sure about the MIJ's, but this US version has a compound radius neck. But I'm sure you know that.
Oh this was years ago before MIJ Fender was over. Nowadays that's probably what you'd have to pay though.
The Reggie Hamilton is a PJ jazz. Or is it in the "was" category now?
I bought an American Hotrod Precision a few years ago, was trying to pick between that and the Jazz, didn't like the looks of the P pickup on the Jazz for some reason and picked the Precision. Glad i did it's one of the best sounding and playing basses I've ever owned. I love those compound necks. I paid about 1200 bucks new, they listed for over 2000.00, it was a bargain.
I hear ya, I find it a little odd looking as well, but I'm vain, they are really great basses I must agree.
That's odd. These are the non export models but they're still passive right? Is "active jazz bass" a Japanese to English translation thing?
I ordered a Jazz pickguard with P route from warmoth and then enlarged the pickup cavity to fit a P. Used MIM jazz + pickguard + PJ set of choice. Worked like a charm and the cavity is hidden by the pickguard so you can have to be a good wood worker. Can do it with chisels. I prefer the esthetics of a P bass though.
Let's not forget the fender JP 90, though I don't see them often. They don't seem quite as refined as a traditional Jazz but still the general shape with the PJ pickup configuration. They play and sound great but generally seemed over priced IMO being more of a slab body.
