On this general topic....What amazes me more than anything, is this effort nowadays to eradicate everything that can possibly cause harm. OK, sure, scientific evidence clearly points to the dangers of many, many substances that DO in fact harm health, but the problems are more complex:
1) One individual will respond to a substance more than another. There is no "linearity" to chemical effect overexposure (especially since most lab studies are done on rats, and other small creatures). Medications are the same way - there is no one strength pill for everyone who needs it.
2) People, for better or worse, can choose for themselves. AGREED, the taxpayers suffer when the medical issues escalate - but has anyone ever considered (an example) that childhood obesity is NOT JUST because of diet? When I was a kid, we rode bikes, we played outdoors, we ran, jumped, swam, walked to school, marched in band, burned calories - and ate a lot of junk, a lot of sugar, a lot of fat. Most kids were skinny, aside from the GENETIC predisposition that some had. Today's kids sit with their arses glued to the couch and a handheld video game. Whose fault is this?
3) DO YOU WANT your government telling you how to live? What to consume? What NOT to consume? The push is on NOW.....
4) AMAZING how many octagenerians we have around today that led hard lives - worked in factories - smoked for decades - ate lard - were exposed to leaded gasoline - drank unfiltered water - had overexposure to the sun - used benzene - drank alcohol heavily - and for being their age, worn, are yet STILL ALIVE! Incredible.
So, getting back to the subject, I agree with the OP, BUT, disagree that it is anyone else's "privelege" to tell someone else they should not do something. It's bad, it sucks, it doesn't make sense, but that's reality. I am not a smoker, never have been, I remember when I was a kid and was in a closed car in the winter with parents who smoked. It was torture. I don't care for it, I'm glad that most resturants and public arenas ban it now, but if someone else wants to fill their lungs with smoke, it's their business.
In the meantime, the gov't can tell me all about the dangers of saturated fat, thank you very much, I'll eat my burgers.
