I would think that an active bass would still be a Hi Z instrument output.​

In my experience it would not. The key difference being that engaging a hi-Z button or using a hi-Z input with an active bass will likely sound no different than the lo-Z equivalent which is not true if passive basses. There may be some change in level but that’s not necessarily a problem depending on the operating range.

I somehow managed to get it to work again, the inputs are so sensitive that if you don't use a d.i. box to drastically decrease the volume before the input stage, it is just overwhelmingly loud. That being said, it is pretty usable otherwise so far? We'll see how it goes.

Are you getting those results with an active or a passive bass? If it's active just turn down the volume knob on the bass since there will be no tonal difference and it saves you having to patch in a DI box and XLR cable. If it's passive then a DI or some external volume control would indeed be necessary if you don't like the tone of the passive bass with the volume rolled off.

I've used both active and passive basses plugged directly into the interface without issue. Just make sure the level for the input is turned down low before setting your recording levels.

If it’s active then turning down the volume on the bass and turning up the output from the Presonus should be linear if you match the net output from the system. If you don’t match the volumes then Fletcher Munson comes into play even if the actual signal is no different other than level.

I'm not mixing, just getting my bass in w the most frequency range possible and sending stems to be mixed elsewhere.

Right, and turning down the volume control on an active bass won’t be a limitation in that regard.
