THREAD RESUSCITATION!
Anyone else use this preamp now? Thinking of switching up from my Eden navigator. Need something with more compression control. Comp is an integral part of my sound... Also I need something that isnt GOLD....

I can tell you for sure - it's not gold!
I love the compressor in this unit.
It's quiet, natural and versatile.
I have a ton of punch dial into mine and still get a good cap on my pops.
I like it better than any compressor I've used in my bass rig...

The thing totally caught my eye and I was about to pull the trigger when.....
I found out it uses a wall wart- deal breaker. My rules for portability include
no warts. I would move up to the eureka despite the lack of a tube. My own
choice is a Joe Meek SixQ- Big, bold, deep and the opto compressor is fat.

the power supply has been commented earlier in thread.
put a power strip in your rack, tape the power supply down if you must.

It's the only preamp I use.
I'm still loving mine.
Studio quality, perfect for bass.
Two things I wish it had:
1. A ground lift
2. A DI out, because I use both the outputs to drive my amp.
Otherwise I'm very pleased...

Resurrecting a dead thread, but ST, 3056, PB, How is the compressor? Specifically, how is it at limiting, and is it particularly squashy? Any dramatic increase in noise at moderate levels?
It's a compressor and not a limiter.
There is a difference.
The compressor is studio quality.
I love the compressor and play with compression on all the time.
It is not squashy and adds no significant noise at moderate levels.
It works exactly the way I would expect it to work.
It's one of the few compressor I've liked...
Could anyone comment as to how this unit compares to either an Ampeg SVP-CL/ ProII and/or compared to a Yamaha PB-1?
From what I remember the compressor could do from a completely inaudible light compression to a light squashed effect like compression and everything in between. It won't get as heavy as standalone compressors but it is more than enough for a channel strip. Didn't add any noise I could hear.
Anyone able to compare this to an Ampeg pre?
Have been saving my pennies toward an Ampeg to have along with my borrowed Yamaha but am wondering how close this gets?
Have no way to demo other than purchase and return (and have no way to try Ampeg unless somebody will rent me one for a day).

I can't compare it to the Ampeg but it's in another league from PB1.
There's probably 25 to 30 years between the two pre's.
The Presonus is a channel strip as such it's not supposed to sound like anything. It's supposed to be neutral.
If you know the EQ curves of your favorite pre you can dial in pretty good approximations of them.
I'm an Aguilar fan so I dial in the Aggie 40/400/4000 curve and it sounds pretty close.
I just bought one of these and am waiting for it to be delivered.

a compressor can act as a limiter perfectly, it depends on how you set it, if you rise the ratio above 20:1 and the attack to fast it will be a limiter.
the main difference is that the semi has a fixed Q and on the parametric it´s adjustable (the nerrower the Q - more freqs are affected arround the choosen one), E.g: if you have selected 1k and you have the Q at 0.5 that means it affects from 500hz to 2K. If you adjust the Q higher than the freqs affected are narrower, let´s say you have adjusted the Q at 1, than the affected freqs are (don´t know exactly) more like from 750hz to 1.5K

Just read the owner's manual and it sounds like it is very adjustable and had very good S/N & distortion specs.
How about the tube drive?
Manual says:
Tube Drive. The Tube Drive control increases the amount of signal routed through the 12AX7 vacuum
tube. (The gain controls overall volume, whereas the drive controls volume routed through the tube.)
The effect achieved ranges from subtle to extreme, depending on the setting being used:
o “Warming Up the Sound”. This effect is achieved by adding in a small amount of Tube Drive
(30% or less). It is especially desirable for vocals and electric bass. The resulting sound is
richer and sweeter.
o “Overdriven Tube Sound”. This effect is achieved by adding in 30-100% of Tube Drive. The
more Tube Drive you add, the more overdriven the sound will be. This sound is extremely
useful in creating distorted guitar and that authentic “blues harp” harmonica sound.
Does the tube drive give the tubey goodness that we associate with a decent tube bass amp (or preamp) front end?
This unit sounds like a champ yet have not read that much about it here!
