Presonus Studio Studio Channel Preamp

Supertanker -- does your studio channel make noises when the buttons are pushed and knobs are turned?
Mine didn't have an on/off switch but it also was silent when turning knobs or on/off of switches; decent sound just sterile for my application
Not when the knobs are turned, but when the buttons are pushed - yes.
Nothing I wouldn't expect...
What do you mean by sterile?
I'm heavily considering this pre-amp soon. It's between this and the BBE Max.

i think that he means 'not much 'character'. and that also is the same for my Presonus Eureka. its really good, but just 'flat sounding' to me.
Well you have to keep in mind that is a "channel strip".
It's supposed to be flat.
I have no problem dialing in eq curves and compression to make it sound exactly the way I want it to. Plus a tube roll helped immensely.
It took a little work but mine sounds as good as any preamp I've ever owned...

believe me,i know that. but by 'flat', i'm saying it doesn't have the transparency, clarity and depth that i'm used to. and not as much headroom either.

As I had mentioned previously, this box does not have a very deep soundstage nor is it very 3-dimensional; also not tubey at all; a very fair deal for $300 but don't expect a miracle; for me, a used Yamaha PB-1 or Ampeg CL offers much better inherent tone but less adjustability and no compression
If you need a ton of knobs this could work but the audio is not that great IMO

Flat means neutral with no apparent tone of its' own
A device can be ruler flat and not have much dynamic range, clarity, transient response, depth, etc.

See I'm under the impression that "flat" means I control the dynamic range, clarity, transient response, and depth with my bass and technique; as opposed to the amp doing it for me. A clean canvas so to speak -- Clarity.

i think that you're under the wrong impression then.
flat means no frequency response coloration.

Okay... so if nothing is "added or removed" by the amplifier, then the sound of my bass and technique come through better. Right?

i don't think that you're quite 'getting it'.
the sound of your bass will come thru 'uncolored' tone-wise, but that doesn't mean it will have the punch, depth, clarity, and headroom of some of the better preamps.
i'm not knocking Presonus at all (i have a Eureka that i use for other things), but to me, its just not as good as many of my other bass preamp/channel strips. i do think that their Studio Channel Strip is pretty good for the money, but i think that my Art Pro Channel is alot better (and i paid $250 for it NIB/shipped).

Punch can be dial in with eq (125hz ~250hz) and compression.
And I LIKE PUNCH!!!
Depth can be handled with a tube roll.
Clarity - generally with eq
Headroom? How much headroom do you need?
I have never overdriven the input stage with any of my basses active or passive.
If your talking output the pre has 70db of gain.
I have found none of the issues that have been mentioned.
I had an Art Pro Channel. I was impressed when I first got it.
But it wore thin quickly. Way too much noise for me. I was glad when I sold it.
My Presonus replaced an Aguilar DB659 because I got so close on the tone there was no need to keep the Aggie.
I ran them side by side until I got it right and I've never looked back.
Other folks have dialed in Eden or Ampeg or other pre's curves with success.
Also keep in mind everyone has different taste.
In the end it's all good...
