Presonus Studio Studio Channel Preamp

I'm just buying the presonus because I like the features, the looks, and I want to be different ;)

I bet I'll be able to make it sound good ;) but we'll find out I guess. Could always A/B it and swap it later if it's not that great.

i'm sure that you'll be happy with it. remember, 90% of it is the 'nut behind the wheel'. ;) it is a very adjustable preamp with a decent compressor and eq, so you should be able to dial in a really good sound.

i mean, alot of people have 'dissed the focusrite tone factory, but i have to say, its one of my favorites that i own, and i had to spend alot of time with it to tweak it to get it where i wanted it. its definitely 'colored', but just the way that i like it. ;)

The 610 is a very nice unit. It has it's own character .
I have the first version and use it on different stuff , complete and versatile.
Sounds amazing on bass , I would bring it around on gigs but it doesn't seem to be very "road worty". (that's a personal feeling , not based on bad experience)

Finally received my studio channel preamp, after it was backordered for about a month from MF. I love this thing, my sound is incredible and the EQ is very functional. I have a tube that I'm going to swap out, and I'll get some pics later!

It only gets better.

Once you get a feel for the controls and what they are capable of that when the fun really starts...

I played around with one today at the store through a Yamaha powered wedge. Pretty impressed. Not with the wedge (I think I'd use a "flat" bass cab and power amp) but with the Studio Channel. I am not big into overdrive/distortion s I like how it just gets thicker when you boost the tube on the preamp. The compressor is great - very subtle which I like, and the EQ is killer. Add all the other options and you have a decent little preamp.

I use Genz Benz gear now and love it, but I have always like my bass sound at church the best - DI to board (channel strip) to FOH. The Studio Channel, a nice power amp and a nice cab would be a killer "flat tone/sound of my bass" kind of rig. Of course with a rig like this, there's more to carry around, I'd need a DI, etc.

I have the studio channel and have been shopping for a power amp that is a good match tonally to power a pair of Eden D210Ts. Are you happy with the GX5? Also, does it really fit in a shallow rack?

It does fit in a shallow rack.
IIRC it's 10.5 inches.

I can't say enough good about the GX5.
It quickly became my favorite amp.
It's extremely flexible.

It's nice, clean, power. And plenty of it.
I like the fact you can run a 4 ohm cab with a 8 ohm cab and not worry about having problems (I blew up a power strip one time).

You can get 500 watts per channel into 8 ohms or 750 into 4.
850 into 4 ohms on a single channel or 600 watt @ 8 ohms.

I paid $299 for a floor model.

All the power I'll ever need...

Sad to say my studio channel developed a little issue where it distorts and the output is inconsistent and unpredictable. Sending it in for warranty service. I did a tube swap when I bought it (can't find the stock tube...) so hopefully they still repair it...

Bumping this (absolutely freaking AWESOME!) thread for more info. I'm bouncing back and forth right now b/t the Presonus and the ART Prochannel. The ART has so much in there as well as all the in/out loops. But the much lower price is putting me off. Not that I want to spend more, but as in the "you get what you pay for" fear.

So...BUMP for more info.

@SUPERTANKER: Are you still loving your Presonus?
@THUD: Did you get yours fixed?

Thanks!

Mike

Same here. I just found a used Presonus on CL locally, asking price $150, and sorely tempted to make the buy. I have extra glass on hand for a "tube roll". If I buy it and don't like it for whatever reason, ya'll will be the first to know.

Good luck, Riis! If I buy the Presonus, I plan on buying a new preamp tube (TungSol or SovTek) at the same time so I can do a bit of playing around. The ART has three tubes...don't know if I want to mess with that...
Here's hoping for some more info/user testimonials!

Well, it's a go. I pick it up at 4 today. Pretty good deal, too, but not such a good deal if it doesn't meet my needs. I won't know until I monkey with it. That's the trouble with CL transactions....no returns for the most part. For the money, it will make an interesting experiment if nothing else.

I had an ART a few months back and sold it before giving it a fair shake. Like the Presonus, I've heard they shine if you roll new glass into 'em.

Good luck, Riis and please do let us know what you think. Even if it doesn't work for you, you should be able to unload it for what you paid for it. It's worth the test drive. :)

Thanks for the reply, Supertanker; glad to hear that it's still working out for you. Also, I appreciate your thoughts on the Art Prochannel. Did you swap the tube in the Presonus? If so, what tube did you use? Don't want to go back and reread all 150+ posts of this thread. LOL! Thanks!

Mike

ps
Riis/SuperT: Not to derail the thread but...Did either of you use the BBE BMax-T? What did you think of it?
