Presonus Tube pre vs newer models

Hello.
So, my mentor comes over to the house tonight and hands me the original Presonus Tubepre (two knobs and a geiger counter).

WOW! It knocked my socks off. I'm new to bass gear, and have only had a Peavey Basic 112 head and the BDDI thru power amp for comparison... But damn, that makes the bass sing and loud and proud. I'm putting it thru my same qsc, but the pure tone of the tube… loving it.

It would be nice if the guru forgets he left it with me, but grasshopper has realistic doubts. I'm going to have to buy one for myself. There are now many new versions, (I live in the middle of crawfish fields with no access to models) and would like to know opinions of orig. vs ver2 vs blue tube, etc.

All i know about it is that apparently the circuit desing doesn't really benefits much from the tube.

Don't know if this helps much either, but I compared the overdriven signal of an ART MPA II pre with JJ tubes and the Ibanez ts9b (b stands for bass) and the Ibanez box sounded very much like a real tube getting pushed. That mix knob in it is specially neat.

I'm on my 2nd of the original PreSonus TubePres. I've loved the unit, but you should probably read my full review [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], where I detail the issues I've had with it. Weigh what I have to say with your needs. Hope this helps.

Oh, and if I understand the design properly, it's a nicely punchy class A design. The "drive" is the pre-gain, while the "gain" is the post-gain. The "drive" functions as you would expect, though you might have to push it more than you'd expect while keeping the post-gain down for a manageable level unless driving a power amp. The "gain" control, as post-gain, will give you one heck of a punchy signal with or without the "drive", but the "drive" will soften the impact some while warming up the sound.

thanks for the link and review. this is my first experience with any type tube. the warmth + seemingly quicker response of the notes makes me a new tuber.
