Pretty sure flats can cure everything.....

I had truly never read or heard anything about half rounds (unless you count the Tone and Feel Spectrum Chart on the back of a Chromes package). I have now ruled those out completely. I'm going to put the stock (whatever they are) rounds back on the 900 and put the La Bellas on the SR300 and leave it at that for a while. I have to admit that I've never used HiBeams at all. Maybe I'll grab some and try them out in the near future.

But I must say again that D'Addario Chromes on a Pbass are truly delightful for me.

And the opinions from different players playing different basses at different levels of skill with different ideas of what "it" should sound like is why I love this place!

I finally put the La Bellas on my SR300. I had on it some GHS coated nylons. I loved the feel of those while trying to learn(the stock rounds gave me fits when trying to change hand positions) but they muted most of the sound that should come from that little bass. Believe it or not, I actually love the La Bellas on it. Yes, it would probably be better off with some HiBeams or something but I use the SR300 in my office with a Hartke B300 amp and keeping a nice mellow tone makes life good for me.

So a quick run down:

2001 FrankenFender P-bass with D'Addario Chromes = WIN!
2011 Fender Standard Upgrage P-bass with Chromes = WIN!
2010 Ibanez SRT900DX active with La Bella DTBs = probably not....
2009 Ibanez SR300 active with La Bella DTBs = I think i dig it!

Now I just need to get some HiBeams or other rounds and restring the Ibby 900 and then I think I'll have my small stable of basses where I'd like them to be......although, I'm still tempted to put some Chromes on the Ibby 900 just to see............:hiding:

Don't feel too hurt though I played DTBs for almost 4 years until switching to GHS pressurewounds a year ago and more recently Rotosound pressurewounds so I might just be talking out of my ass. That said any non-flat is certainly more revealing IME while the flats superiority neme goes on here at TB. Makes you think.

I think you did a great job at filtering out the personal opinions and did end up with some pretty familiar sounding conclusions.

Unlike most, I do have an Ibanez SRT900DX and I did strung it with La Bella's flats (O.K. not the FL but the FS, still pretty close).

Although I consider myself a 'flatwounder', I took them off.
The very bright and very punchy sounding SRT900DX just didn't blend good with the hazy attack and mellow sound of the La Bella's.
The Labella's are great on my Aria, but the combi Labella's and SRT900DX was like 'worst of two worlds' for me.

I did also try Chromes on the SRT900DX; it might be good for you (it did have a great attack!), but for me it was a inferior version of my SR1000 prestige with the Chromes.

Finally I changed them to .....HiBeams!
So now I have a very modern sounding bass, a kind of sound wich is not realy my sound....but at least it sounds good.

I have intended to make a post relating to that particular bass. I bought the loaded body on E-bay. I bought the Mighty Might neck on E-bay. I bought the ReRanch amber and satin clear from ReRanch. And tuners on E-bay. Yes, the neck is tinted and was done by me (as rookie as they come).

It was my first attempt at anything like this. I screwed up just about everything along the way and still ended up with it being my favorite bass. I am trying to find the pictures I took so I can make that post. I'll try to do that in the next day or two. I actually have the neck off now to try and repair some of my mistakes. I am hoping to be able to do all of it in one post (start, finish, tear down, repair, finish again). I may just do it in two posts.

@Markanini - The "any non-flat is certainly more revealing" statement slapped me in the back of the head. It's not that I didn't know that but hadn't truly considered that it may not be what I'm hearing that I like as much as what I'm NOT hearing, lol.

@Krucial - So few people actually have the 900 that your input is incredibly valuable to me. Thanks!

@Mongo2 - JimmyM has been playing bass longer than I've been alive. He KNOWS what something will sound like. So his statement is true. But what if you've never heard an Ibby with flats on it? The statement is still true but doesn't do me a bit of good having not heard it before (Love ya JimmyM, you can crash my threads any time you want to!). It's like when my mom told me not to touch the stove because it was hot. How the hell was I to know what "hot" was until I touched the stove? i think I was 22 at the time..................
