Double Bass Primer and basses

I wanted to primer my bass because a stage show won't hold up to keeping my bass looking nice, plus A black primer looks nice in my opinion. Well, my question is this, to anyone who has primered a bass before, How good/bad does it affect the tone of the bass?

I haven't primered a bass, but I have had primer on cars before. My advice: You don't actually want primer. What you want for a permenant job is some sort of flat or satin paint, basically an ordinary finish but with a flatening agent in it. Primer never stays looking good, plus, it absorbs moisture. I'm not sure that'd be an issue on a bass, but it certainly can't help things. It'll rust out your car in short order... If you really want to do it right, your best bet is going to be talking to a pro at a paint shop that does a lot of work on rods, customs, choppers and the like.

As far as the effect on your tone, it's sure not going to help. All of these kinds of paints are thick and heavy compared to varnish or even nitro laquer, but if you're playing amplified, hey, it might even help, right?

Eric, I really don't see why you shouldn't shoot your bass with satin black lacquer if that's the look you're after. Kays are lacquered, after all, and Brent's Beauties look like nitrocellulose lacquer to my eyes.

You will need to prep the bass properly of course.

yup, flat black sounds like a good idea.....what's the best way to remove a glossy paint finish without damaging the wood? Thanx for the tips....keep in mind this is a CCB......and I plan to put rubber on the bottom to keep the wood from chipping during outdoor gigs.

I'll go all out on my second one....hehehe...
