To me his music just doesn't age well :wideyed: and always has sounded dated to me, :jawdrop: so whatever he called himself at any given time was not at all interesting to me. :thumbsdown:

per the OP: i voted "any/all" --- i thought the cat was a savant. weird, but genius. but i didn't know him...maybe he just worked his a$$ off. i just changed my vote to "both." :D

I agree with you on all counts. But then again, most of the handful of players who make my "genius" category aren't on most people's radar that way, whereas a lot of folks who I consider mediocre are revered for reasons I don't understand. I'm not sure what that says about me or you or anyone else. Just an odd observation :)
 
I loved watching wendy melvoin play his solo stuff at the end of purple rain on the live tribute show they did a couple years back (I don't recall how many years back, but after he died). She's not showy like him, but she's a heck of a musician and a fantastic guitarist, only overshadowed by the fact that he was one of the world's greatest, and showiest, guitarists, while Wendy was always hard working and not there to show off.
