Ha, a couple years ago i played on a track and went to the studio when it was being mixed. I heard what I thought was a pretty obvious mistake. I said, can I redo this somehow? The engineer and the writer/producer said "it sounds good to us". Could be they didn't care or or i was overly critical but, to this day, I hear that mistake anytime i listen to that track. Whatever, just another rock demo that will never leave the basement but it has always bugged me.

I’ve seen and heard plenty of pros make mistakes, usually smiling or laughing. I saw Dave Holland make a mistake and he went back to it and started to work his line so it wasn’t a mistake any more. Also plenty of blown entrances.

Hard to say what kind of music Snarky Puppy is. To my sensibilities it’s more arranged than jazz. I get the sense they play tunes the same way every time, more or less.

Might be what millennials call big band.

I recall reading a quote from Michael League somewhere where he said Snarky Puppy isn't really jazz--it's pop music that happens to be instrumental with a lot of improvisation.

This may be an unusual opinion but mistakes add to the authenticity of some records.

A lot of blues records I listen to, especially Hill-country are recorded you know in a Juke-Joint or with a group who aren't so into recording, but when you hear a mistake or a little error and they keep going it only really adds to the human element of that artist.

This reminded me of a story from the liner notes of Jimmy Smith's Blue Note album 'The Sermon'. It's about Lee Morgan on Trumpet - Smith had a signal to alert the soloists to wrap up. He'd hit a piercing, not quite discordant key on the organ. This was a 'live studio' recording, the cut is 'J.O.S', and Lee had just played a nice long solo. Smith hits the key (at about 6:25) and Lee just blows right past it and plays another few bars, until Smith does it again - more emphatically - and Lee hears that one. LOL.
