Pro Tools 9 Problem

Hey y'all, I am having a few problems with Pro Tools 9. I just got it installed the other day, and in order to get it to work properly I had to install ISIO4ALL. No problem.

But now, when I want to record I have to go to Setup ->Hardware -> Launch Hardware App -> Digidesign Mbox 2 Audio. Then I can record no problem. When I want to hear any playback I have to go to Setup -> Playback Engine and then switch current playback engine to Creative ASIO. When I change to Creative, I am allowed to playback. BUT THEN I cannot open ProTools next session because it says ProTools is being used by another application.

/frustrated!!!

Make sure you have System Sounds turned off. They can grab an audio interface and not release it.

If you have Creative ASIO you shouldn't need ASIO4ALL
From inside of Pro Tools is where you should launch the ASIO panel. This is how ASIO works, the applications get to configure it.

ASIO4ALL wants exclusive access to the hardware. That is how it works better than most WDM drivers. Creative is probably doing the same.

You might just want to try WDM instead, it's works great with things like Cakewalk, it might work good for Pro Tools. And you can set it so applications can share the audio.

Okay, I got protools to load up, again, uninstalled ASIO4All, but still get no play back. For playback engine should it be set to Mbox2 or Creative ASIO(evertime Ihave it set to this is when I get the 'hardware not installed or being used by another program)

Start -> control panel -> Sound
Sounds tab
Sound Schema = No sounds

Actually set it to "digidesign asio" or "Mbox asio" that way you can hear other audio, also make sure that the Sample rate is set the same when you open PT....I had a smiler problem with my Focusrite liquid saffire 56 and PT 9....

Also try looking hear, there is a lot of helpful information!

Right now I have it set so I can record, I just cannot hear any playback. I was hoping to use my computer monitors connected to the green port on my soundcard, but I cannot get that right now, so I will have to invest in some studio monitors to connect to the Mbox2

Something is hanging onto the sound device and marking it busy.
Check what applications get's started at boot

This might help:
Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds
Select the playback device, pick Properteries, and go to the Advanced tab
Uncheck
Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device
Apply, OK

I think that's the best route. It also gives you a secondary playback speaker setup (with the soundcard speakers) to test mixes that are made on your studio monitors.

Btw - have you considered PT10? If you bought recently you might be entitled to the upgrade at no cost.

Wait, wait, if your speakers are not connected to the mbox then you will NOT get playback through them when the mbox driver is selected. standard. The speakers should come out of the mbox, thats what you buy it for, to be the soundcard in your system!

The green output on the computers soundcard will not work when the mbox driver is selected without some serious fiddling around. You need to plug you speakers into the mbox and use that for playback. It doesn't need to mean buying studio monitors. I assume your speakers are stereo mini jack in? If so you just need to buy enough adapters to get from dual mono jack outs on the mbox to stereo minijack socket. I did this with my first setup way back when. Something like 'dual mono jack to stereo socket converter', then probably 'stereo big jack to stereo small jack converter' to get to your speakers.

If you are plugging your speakers into the computer soundcard and expecting pro tools to run that along with the Mbox then its just not gonna happen without a lot of fiddling and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned on the thread already. To put it simply the mbox takes over the job of your computer soundcard entirely when in use, this is not a problem, its just how it works! No need for installing and no real evidence of other drivers nabbing priority. Plug it in like this and see if it works, if not then we can start suggesting alternative solutions.
