Problem keeping string on tuning key?

Recently when changing my G string I am unable to keep it secured to tuning key. Once I start tightening string it skowly starts slipping until it completely comes undone. This is new.. I've changed strings 5-7 times with this bass and no problems. I've tried different strings, more wraps/less wraps, etc..

Anyone have this problem? Any solutions? All others work perfectly.

It is a MIM fender Roger Waters p bass. A little over a year old.

Multiple brands. Tried Ernie ball, daddario, Dean markley..ended up using on another bass..so no loss there.

I'll try and get a pic this afternoon. It starts to tune up..then reachest a point where it doesn't get tighter.. The string starts slipping and eventually just comes all the way out.

Just stock on MIM Roger Waters bass. They are the "vintage open gear tuners"

What I meant with op was..I have no issue with e, a, d strings. It's just the g. Same tuners. And this is a recent issue. I inspected key Best I could, no visible marks, everything secure, etc..

I would suggest going over on the first wrap & then under:

I know these aren't the same kind of tuning pegs, but you should get the general idea.

Do you not put a 90 degree bend in the string and put the end straight down into the center of the tuner?
I can't imagine how this happens.

I'm having a little trouble picturing this problem, myself. Unless the gears are slipping on the one tuner (which would be a trick in itself), this should be pretty much impossible if the string is installed properly. And, yeah, a picture of, say, the A or D string installed on the tuner, and the tuner in question, might help...:eyebrow:

Had that problem with an Elixir G previously. Also had the same problem with a TI G string. It is very important to make a sharp right angle bend where you insert the string end in the tuning post. Also might help to fill in the extra space in the tuning post hole by making a 180° bend in the string so that 2 widths of string end go into the hole. If that doesnt help, then the "first wrap over, subsequent wraps under" trick works by locking the string tightly to the post with tension.

this is the A string...tried the 90degree bend..going to have to get another string to try the over/under..i clipped this one after it trying to install it...my jazz bass has similar tuners, and I have never had a problem. Never had a problem with this one until recently..no clue whats going on, unless Ive just been getting lucky installing wrong all this time..

thanks for the help guys..will try over under once I get more strings

With respect, it's improper installation. No other possibility.

Wind downward from the top of the tuner, AT LEAST four full wraps, winding over the string as you go downwards. And secure the end of the string with a 90 degree bend in the tuner.

If they're too short to get at least four full wraps around the tuner, buy new strings and throw the short ones out.

I had the same thing happen to me for the first time, I am using DR Hi-Beams 105's. G string kept going flat until it completely slipped, I thought the string busted. I took some needle nose and put a hard 90 degree downturn and then a right turn, so far so good.20160519_194007.jpg 20160519_194042.jpg
