Problem with a mixing desk

Hello,

I just bough a new mixing desk (Behringer Xenyx 802), so i could have both my (guitar and bass) amps and keyboards as well as my computer all running trough my headphones.

Now i seem to have hit a problem. And it's a loudness/distortion (i think gain) problem. While keeping both ctrl room and main vol at 9 o clock the computer works perfectly, the volume is great. The keyboards also work fine. The problem comes when i try to plug my amps (or just guitar/bass) into the powered channel (with xlr's / 6.3 plugs). Either it distorts them badly or the sound is unbelievably quiet.

I might be doing something wrong, but i figured since it's a passive board i could run a powered amp trough it with normal volume from the get go, or at least a guitar/bass.

I've tried setting the gain up, the way the manual says i should, which is setting volume to zero, and just turning gain untill it shows 0db, but the volume meters don't even light up. The only thing that happens is, that as soon as i start turning the gain knob, the clip light goes on.

Are you using the line level outputs from your amps and not the speaker outputs? Speaker outputs = bad.

Em only using volume and gain on my amp settings, they're both combo amps, im using headphone jack to run them into mixer, but it distorts just guitar or bass straight in also..

Use your line outs on your amps into line ins on your mixer. If the channels have mic trim, start with it all the way down and the faders at 0db, then only bring the trim up enough to get a strong signal.

I don't know why you would try to run a headphone output into a line input unless that is all you have, but most amps have a line out at least (esp if they also have a headphone output).

Do that and report back if it works. I bet it will solve all your problems.

^^^ Agree. Unlike a line out, your headphone out is actually a powered output, (so you can hear the headphones) and does not match the the line inputs on your mixing board.

Seems to somewhat solve the problem if i run it trough line-out. There's still a lot of clipping, and the bass has low volume, but i'm fine with that. How about for my guitar amp? It has no line out (it's a small combo amp). (still distorts if i only plug guitars/basses in, if i want to match the volume of the computer tho).
