Problem with vol-vol config

I have buildt a 2 string bass with 2 pickups. By theme selfe the pickups work fine, but when I try to blend them, there is a notably loss in volum. Has anybody experiensed this before? Is there a simple solution?

The pickups are out of phase with each other. The fix is to reverse the polarity on one of them. So assuming they have at least two conductors not counting a shield wire (so not like vintage coax cable), just swap the hot and ground on one of the pickups.
