Double Bass Problems with sound! Help wanted!

Hi!
I am using the AI coda III together with presonus eq 3b and Schertler dyn B. I am not happy with my sound! Any suggestions? Should I try a new microphone? Or should I blend the dyn-B with another mic? I want my bass to sound warm, an I want it to be loud enough so it can be heard even when I am standing close to a drummer....

I have been using the dyn B for a couple of years now. It`s pretty good going through a PA, but through my amp- Not good.

Hi Sidecar!

I am using The Coda R series III. The AI combo. Sorry! I think it is very hard to get a warm and distinct sound, especially when I want to turn the volume up...(playing with a drummer). The mic just not seem to work well with the amp. I am thinking of trying a new mic, or blend with the Dyn B, Just to get my bass a little more in front. Any suggestions?

There's always going to be a tradeoff on volume or tone when you're using just a mic. If you need more volume, you may want to consider using a pickup. Regarding the AI combos, I love their sound, but they do not make the best stage monitors, IMO. They really put the sound *out* in the house. You might be surprised at how much sound is actually heard in the house even though it doesn't sound nearly loud enough on stage. Part of this, is because they are just SO clean sounding and you're not going to get a huge low end presence with a single 10" pushing the lows.

Sorry, my bad- I was mixing it up with the Clarus.

I observed the same with my Contra and my Dyn-B, and I chose a different way. I sold my Contra. I tried PJBs Flightcase and Super Flightcase, and they work much better with the dyn-b, even without a preamp. I have not bought one yet due to the fact that I don't need an amp at the moment (I either play acoustically or plug into the house system). I found the AIs not to be nearly as neutral as some people suggest, they are rather midrange-heavy and never really worked well for me on stage (the sound outside was good, but I figured what's the use if I can't hear myself at all?).

The PJBs are really clean and neutral, and they have a good EQ that helps very much in taking out the honk of the dyn-b. And thy fire upwards partly, that makes them perfect on stage because they blow into your ear.

Regarding volume, with the dyn-b I was able to get a much louder sound that actually sounds like an acoustic bass than with any other PU I remember. They all sound electric, whereas the microphone-like attack of the dyn-b remains intact in higher volumes. But it takes considerable experimenting with positions, pressure, EQ, and whatnot.
