Problems with the old people next door

Gregbummer had some good advice EXCEPT the foam! Foam does not sound proof, it is for tuning room acoustics. Adding a bunch of foam to your walls more often than not makes things worse, it does nothing to stop sound leakage but often kills the room acoustics to the point where you actually have to play louder to hear yourselves in the room, annoying your neighbors further. Otherwise some solid points

I agree. The guy next door who used to always call the police when my band practiced here was his late 20s. Since then I've moved on to other bands and no one practices here anymore anyway. But I don't see why age is being made such an issue.
When I first put my band together we had this problem. We practiced at the guitarists house. He has older neighbors on both sides of him. They called and complained. We ignored them. Then one Sunday at about 1 in the afternoon a cop shows up. I explained to him that it was 1 o'clock in the afternoon and we weren't breaking any laws. He said we were too loud. I asked him if he had a decibel meter. He went away. Still, my guitar player has to live near these people, who kept right on calling and complaining. The working name of my band at that point was "Pissing off the neighbors". That's no lie. Still, we found other, more suitable arrangements.
My point is, you don't have to live next to these people, your guitarist does. So do him a favor and find someplace else to rehearse.

I have rights too. If I wanna jam in my basement at a reasonable hour and I'm not breaking any laws then everyone can suck it regardless of age.

Im in a pretty loud band, but we play at my drummers house and he owns 7 acres. The neighbors are pretty far away so its not a problem. However, I would never entertain having a band practice at my house. The neighborhood is quiet, small children with early bed/nap times, and even though they are all new large houses, they are not that far apart.
I understand where the OP is coming from, alot of us were there at one point or another, however I can say if I was trying to get my daughter down for a nap at 3pm on Sunday afternoon and couldnt because next door cookie monster was belting out some diatribe about Beelzebub in drop C, I would be calling the cops too.

Yep. My neighbour snowblowed my front walk all winter in exchange for a plate of cookies.

I own a home in a quiet neighbourhood.
Reasonable neighbours who respect your rights as much as you respect theirs are good neighbours. By calling the cops on a non-emergency they're wasting tax pay dollars and taking potentially taking an officer away from more important duties. These are neighbours I would have no problem creating a poor relationship with. If it's not noise it'll be something else like you didn't have time to cut your grass one week or some other thing not worth complaining about. People need to mind their business.
That said I am in superb standing with every one of my neighbours who are completely reasonable. I even lend one of them my lawnmower because he can't afford to buy one himself (3 kids, 1 income). I guess I got lucky.
I saw where someone finally mentioned JamHub.
I think that would be the cure to your problems.
I have a similar system in my Cave that I use.
It's a small mixer with inputs for Bass, Mic, Computer, Bass Trainer, IPod, and Stereo all going out a heaphone output.
I can practice allnight without having to hear about it from the rest of the family upstairs.
JAmHub will handle multiple inputs and allow individual mixes and EQ settings. Great for the "More ME!" guys.
Check it out.

I know it already got said dozens of times, but just go talk to the ol' geezers, and see what 3 hour stretch a week they can handle you guys rocking a little.
The fact the OP felt so cornered as to ask the question here, instead of just talking to the human beings next door, is a sad comment about what has happened to our neighborhoods and how we treat each other.

Well thats what paying $9000 a year in property/school taxes gets me.
I do agree that the OPs band should go over and make nice with the neighbors. Hard to call the cops on your friends. Cut their grass in the summer, let them know anytime you are going to practice. This will work wonders. If it doesnt, do what a hundred other people in this thread have already said...rent a space in an industrial area.
bigfat you obviously have never had a neighbor that complained about anything & everything. a little loud music & they would complain but they would drink & party all night with classic rock blaring outside. also had a different one that would complain about basketball at 1pm on a saturday afternoon. sorry but not everyone deserves to be accomodated. really some people actually deserve to be told to shove it.
