ProCo Rat for Bass? Yes or No.

Do you all use the Rat to get big dirt from the distortion knob or do you ease the distortion knob up until it just starts to be audible (then adjust the volume)?

So I heard that Chris Novoselic from Nirvana used a ProCo Rat for distortion. I wanna replace my DS-1 for a Rat, and put the DS-1 on my guitar board. Would you use the Rat as distortion for bass or is there a better but similar option.

Rats are nice pedals on a bass. Although, they have a FatRat that has a switch for added low end (cough cough for bass cough cough)

Rat circuit works well with bass, especially the clones with blend control.

Quite recently a very expensive but good looking clone came out. Can't remember what it's called at this point though(something 85...?). I'd love to try that one.

Rat on bass is fantastic.

I use a 1990 Rat pedal when I need that sound. The low end loss isnt bad at all, and a small price to pay for a great distortion tone.

If I remember correctly, these are Rat based.

It is not worse than your ds1.


It depends what you want. For example the ds1 is better for type o negative sounds than something with heavy bass response

Im seriously considering the Tremond by Blue Colander, Rat with diodes switch and clean blend which can be LPF to a frequency of your choice with an internal trimpot.

I've never had much luck with stock Rats, I prefered the Turbo out of all of the stock ones but i also has a Rat2 with LM308n, Deucetone Rat, Cat Tail (actually great, would recommend) and a cheap Little Bear Rat clone (actually, this was cool too, gave it to my guitarist).

If you already have a Rat there are a couple of easy mods to reduce bass loss. GOOGLE.

I usually use Rats at lower distortion settings, yeah. Maybe not quite as low as you described, but far from “big dirt”.

I love the Rat, it's the only pedal I use.

I prefer the range you get from the Idiotbox Blower Box. I can use it for sweet, gritty OD if it's BARELY on (we're talking this gets compliments from non-bassists good lol) and of course cranking it gets you that gnarly, nasty rat-style distortion.

The others are great pedals too, but the BB is here to stay on my pedalboard.

I believe the TK-421 is (was?) the Cog Rat. The Knightfall is great but not that kind of sound, really.
