Proco Turbo Rat SOUNDCLIPS

I would say the Rat 2 is smoother, though both pedals are pretty bitey, I mean, they're rats. The Turbo Rat is more saturated, but the Rat 2 can get plenty saturated too, they both achieve a wide variety of sounds by twisting the distortion knob, which you're probably not ever gonna max out, both pedals get fuzzy. The Rat 2 is definitely more compressed, and it sustains a lot better, but it cuts A LOT of bottom. The Turbo Rat is less compressed and holds the bottom a lot better. But it's more of a punchy, cranked Marshall kind of bottom than an Ampeg kind of bottom.
Great sounds. Doesn't sound like it suffers from much low end loss either. Definitely going to have to try one myself.

Yeah, I read often that many users experience the loss of bottom end with the Rat2. But I never experienced that with judicious use of the filter knob. Maybe I like muddy distortion!

hey i really really like the turbo rat with the oc-2... i think i almost wet my pants when i heard it! made me start looking for an octave pedal where ive never really had interest in them before.
i have a question for you since ive also heard the clips of the mxr bass di+ (which i have and like) with the oc-2 that you made... the turbo rat clip sounds a lot more 'thrash' to me than the mxr. did you have the mxr's gain up very much on that clip with the oc2? i guess what im kinda asking is if you think the mxr + oc2 might be able to sound a little more aggressive like the turbo rat + oc2? because if not i dont think im going to be satisfied haha. unfortunately i cant buy both a turbo rat and an oc2... stupid college.

Well, I can't remember exactly where I had the MXR's gain at, but I think it was somewhere in the neighborhood of half, probably less. The gain stays the same on all the samples I did, so the other samples should give you an idea. So there's room to up the gain, but to my ears it'll just get more gainy; it won't get aggressive the way the Turbo Rat is. Sorry!
And for the record the OC-2 I use is an old made in Japan version, which as far as I remember are readily available on eBay for pretty cheap, so if you go for a used OC-2 you might be able to get it and not break the bank. The OC-3 is what's available new (I don't know, do some stores still have OC-2's? They did when I bought mine) and the OC-3 doesn't get that same tone. As far as octavers go I love the tone of the OC-2.

Currently I have 3 fuzzes on my board! I know its crazy for some but its either that or empty space for me. The Rat2 I'm using is really for distortion 'duty'. I play without a pick mostly, so I'd prefer a smooth distortion that doesn't snarl too much when my strings rattle, and the Rat2 is doing pretty fine. But I'm expecting slightly more from my backordered Diesel Dawg
. I get what you mean by getting a synthy fuzz-like sound, it even happens to some extent on the Rat2 yeah? But there's some overcompression going on there, weird swell --> saturation, don't you think?
thanks for the input! thats kinda what i suspected... as much as i love the bass di+ i think i'm going to have to get the turbo rat too. i absolutely love how that combo sounds. i gotta go find something to sell lol.
and im a total cheapskate so im definitely going the used oc-2 route (i hardly buy anything new these days)... ive never really messed with octave pedals before but if thats what your oc-2 sounds like, that is enough for me! thanks!
I picked up a Turbo RAT a couple of days ago - LOVE it! Lots of tones from light crunch to full out over-the-top distortion. All points in between are well covered too. Here's a little clip of me playing against Primus' Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (it was late, I was bored 
). Anyway, I panned my bass 80% to the left speaker & the song 80% to the right speaker to help distinguish what's what...oh, I used a Boss LS-2 to blend in a taste of the clean signal back into the distortion signal. Forgive any sloppy playing you might hear.

I'll give my Robot Factory White Russian a good run through when it gets here, and if I really like it, I may just get one of his RAT clones to go along with it, so I'd have my Fuzz and my slightly less gainy Distortion covered (his is modded to be more like a heavy overdrive than a saturated Fuzz, or so says the eBay ad).
While I was just in the studio, I had the chance to run my Russian Big Muff Pi into an original Proco Rat, into a Chandler LTD-1 tube pre amp...
Sounded amazing, though was very hot... Feedback through the studio moniters if I wasn't muting all the strings. Check out the myspace page for the clip... The song is Mystery.

i max out the distortion on my turbo rat very often for some of our heavier covers like raining blood, and i also like the crazy high-pitched feed back that i can get from it. also, i've had this pedal for a while now, and i use it for at least a few hours a day for at least 2 days a week(i leave it at my drummers house with my TKO between jams) and my battery still hasn't died, is it normal for a pedal to have such a long battery life?

normally i'm a bit more tasteful with my distortion. anyway, maybe it's a bit late now, but i wanna thank you for those samples because without them who knows how long it would've taken me to find a distortion, and who knows if it would've been as good as my turbo rat
