I think PF are better on a writing level, depending on how you judge them. Just being more complicated doesn't make something better. Of course this is personal preference, but Roger's lyrics always made sense to me. And nothing beats a Gilmour solo guitar-wise for me.

But even technicality aside, Rush wrote some really amazing riffs. I'm not the biggest fan of Alex's solos but I think considering the band he's in he is amazing because he will come out and solo when he needs to and drop back when he needs to and it was all in perfect balance back in that 2112-MP era. In general, I think there are many better and more creative guitarists out there, but the La Villa solo (Section IV, A Lerxst in Wonderland) is one of the best ever IMO, the pacing is just spot on. Contrary to many I preferred Neil's storytelling lyrics back in the 70s as opposed to the "more relatable" realistic stuff of the 80s and beyond. I don't deny that PF was a great band - though I never much cared for their music - I have to admire the brains behind it all.

Let me take this opportunity to promote the absolutely delightful Les Claypool's cover of Pink Floyd's Animals album

Animals is probably my number 1 album of all times, bar none. And I listen to a ton of music, and I mean A LOT of music!

I was blown away when I discovered Les Claypool had covered the whole album.

Of course we all know he loves rush, but he has a lot of floyd covers as well.

+1000!

Animals is def my fav PF album. One of my fav albums. Les and the frog brigade did a superb job on that album.

I can understand you not liking his sound, but you have to admire his playing and writing. Saying that PF "blow rush out of the water" may be true on sound (to you), but I don't think they even come close on a playing and writing level. Just take a look at Rush's peak around 1976-1981, unbeatable creativity, Peart's lyrics, those passages and mythological references, the solos, instruments they used, just look at the inner sleeve of AFTK or Hemispheres and see what each guy played, and they pull it all off live with just the three of them. I don't think that could be done by any other band, ever.

Even still, I just don't like their sound. And by saying no other band pull that off. False. Emerson Lake and Palmer did it just as well, if not then better.

Getting back to Pink Floyd, I respect them more due to the different natures of their sound. Any rush song I listen to has the same vibe(to me at least). Take a song like Echoes and compare it to a song like Comfortably Numb. You've got two completely different sounding songs from the same group with musical quality that can't be matched.

Now getting back onto the Floyd/Prog argument, I saw someone mention the ability to play different styles/feelings was major for the criteria of Prog. And listening to the different albums that span Floyd's career(and even within one album), there are very different songs that are so far from the same, yet they complement each other and the artist. Anything I've heard out of Rush has the same sound as the next song.

Now with all that being said, let me make it clear that I am not a rush hater. As well as that I'd much rather listen to rush than any modern artist(minus Muse and a few others) or even someone like the Beatles, Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin.

I've read from different magazines that at certain times Waters didn't play any of his bass parts in the studio, Gilmour played bass on records.

And the drummer Mason had no problem with the studio bringing in schooled drummers to do his parts on later albums as they got more complicated. He said he'd rather be out racing his vintage cars....

Which is "better"? Which is better, a Rolls Royce car or a Peterbuilt Truck? An Alembic bass or a Gibson L-5 guitar. Pink Floyd or Rush. IMHO, when you get to these levels of excellence neither is "better". I just comes down to personal preference. Ask 50 people to name the "best" rock song of all time and get 50 different answers.
Now to my preference. Rush: lot of talent (mho), 3 players on stage. Pink Floyd: lot of talent(mho), lot of players and singers on stage. Hmmmm, comes down to who's songs I "like" the best. I like both a lot. If this were an Olympic competition it would come down to the last judges vote with the winner being Pink Floyd.

Always great to come across others who are in the 'Animals' camp. It's such an experience.

I have grown up with that album since my dad is a huge Floyd fan and to this day (including today!) it never feels old, dated, or just melds with the background (I'm 27). This album is a constant companion to me, through my happiest times and my absolute worst.

I feel a little sad that PF themselves consider this as one of their 'less than pride and joy' albums.

I love all PF albums immensely, but this album is something else for me. The mood is set right from the cover with the photo of the Battersea Power Station.

Anyway, I'm not high, sorry for that gratuitous fanboy description, I'm going to listen to it one more time.

:smug:

Pink Floyd will be listened to 100 years from now the same way as we listen to classical music by the masters. Rush is a great band but PF will weather better over the decades to come IMHO.

I would agree. Not to take anything from Rush, but PF appeals to everyone without sounding like anyone else. Who else could have a #1 album full of sound effects based on madness and greed?

I forgot about that! I, a '70s minded 17-year-old, live in a world where my peers listen to large amounts of talentless artists. Although I stand in awe as I find that some if them enjoy Pink Floyd to a great extent. Never heard 'em say anything about Rush though...
