progressive rock recordings / bands

Meanwhile, back in the 21st Century…
I saw this outfit in a very packed club last night, and my mind is still blown. British guitarist Geordie Greep,

…backed by a band of Americans. He’s the former leader of Black Midi, and while they were a mixture of elements reminiscent of King Crimson, Captain Beefheart, and a whole lot more, propelled by post-punk manic energy, his new direction features(at least to my ears)strains of Soft Machine, Steely Dan, Zappa, and a host of other bits and pieces along with the older styles, with a splash of Latin, constantly changing, never repeating.

Although there was a second guitarist last night(an absolute monster on staccato lead runs), here’s a live set from a few months back…

Shout out to bassist Dave Strawn, a name on the rise. Last night he had a 5-string, and performed a blistering solo, far surpassing the one here(although it ain’t too shabby); for the tl;dr crowd it comes up at 1:10:25.

I always loved Focus.
"Hocus Pocus" was a novelty hit, but their other stuff is serious and amazing. I like the album recorded live at the Rainbow Theater in London.
Focus is one of my all-time favourite bands- superb musicianship (several members were classically trained). Lots of great songs like "Sylvia", "Le Cathedrale De Strasbourg", the Hamburger Concerto suite which takes up the whole side two of the album.
