Projector or plasma

You guys do know that (technically) CRT's have the highest picture quality? They do weigh a ton, and look ugly from side on, but you can't go wrong with a NEW CRT. My family has one, and my Dad and I being tech geeks like to compare it to other screens. And honestly, nothing beats it. Unless you are willing to pay in excess of $6500, I don't think anything beats a QUALITY CRT...

I put emphasis on quality, because some CRT's are shocking. Just a thought, if you have your heart set on a flat panel, get one. :)

Sort your SOURCE out first...

HD _IS_ awesome... I remember seeing a sony demo about 20 years ago, and even on a 22" CRT the quality difference was incredible. Trouble is we're still waiting for the content. Blu-Ray/HD-DVD is still not sorted, and HD cable is still pretty limited.

If you've got a projector/TV thats working, then hold out a little longer. Wait for some HD CONTENT, then when that comes on line by something to watch it on. If your current system can hold out another year or so you'll save big $$$$. Otherwise your HD _READY_ screen is going to sit be an HD _WAITING_ screen, and you'll not see much benefit.

Well, if you want a screen that's bigger than 40" then you're not going to be able to use a CRT. IIRC, the largest CRT made was a 37" and I don't even know if it's still available.

not too much out that that delivers true 1080p..
HD DVD and BluRay are the only sources to do that, cable, off air, DVD, even satellite do NOT transmit in 1080p.

They may in the future.

having said that,, LCD's deliver much better picture with no ghosting than plasma. It's predicted that plasma will drop to less than 23 % market share (of flat panel sales),, and there's a reason..
LCD is improving daily,, rivaling plasma for off axis viewability, and black reproduction.

The largest CRT was actually 38", it was made by RCA, and the tooling has since been sold to German company, that now charges 5 grand for essentially the same set.

I own the RCA 38" CRT. It rocks...but I actually like my new 1080 Magnavox LCD better. I never thought I'd say that, because the CRTs really are superior, and that's what the human eye us "used to" looking at, but the LCDs have come a long way.

I like how the other con of the set on that review was a lack of PIP. As far as I'm concerned that is of little relevance. I have yet to really see anyone utilize it (nobody I know).

once you get to a certain size screen (37"+) the plasma overall produces a better picture than LCD (deeper blacks, better color). As the technology advances (maybe 1-2 years) the LCD probably will catch up. Check http://www.cnet.com for info, the positives, and negatives with LCD's, Plasma's & projectors. Each type has things that are big pluses and each has things to look out for.

The largest CRT was actually 40", made by Mitsubishi, I own it.

Same as this here

But I'm looking to replace it with a plasma, because it stopped working :hmm:
