Proper string gauge for a Danelectro 59 longscale

I wonder if anyone can tell me the proper gauge to use..I wanted to swap out the factory roundwounds with flats(I've got 45-100) but the 100 wont fit through the tuner peg. If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

That isn't a gauge issue it's a ball-to-taper length issue.
The right length of string will get skinny enough to fit through the tuner hole between the nut and post.

To the OP...

  1. What's the actual distance on your bass from where the ball end sits to the nut on the E string?
  2. And the distance between the ball end and the E tuner peg?

You need a string with a winding length (ball end to taper/silk) that falls somewhere between the above two so only the tapered part goes on the tuning post.

Dano DC bass-1.jpg Measure the distance from where the ball end fits the bridge to the nut; then, take that distance to the string length stickies at the top of this forum. You can find the strings that will work on your Dano there. Failing that, I suppose you could always change the tuners to the real bass style ones like my DC 59 Pro has. Actually, I have 2 of them; one (this one) has EB Hybrid Slinkys on it; the other has 39-96 La Bella 760FX DTFs, which, I've heard, were the original strings on these basses back in the day...:cool:

I was talking about the tapered part of the string...the tapered part of the (45-100) E string wouldnt go through the tuning peg hole (too tight)..so I went for a set of 45-96 flats (which seemed to be closer to the factory gauge roundwound strings already on it) and they fit just fine...thanks for all the info
