In other words doing so may allow you to avoid some mechanical failure but it does nothing to raise the limits of thermal failure?

The mids don't use near the power that the lows go through, so you can get a whole lot louder in the mids before thermal failure, but watts are watts if you ignore the extra cooling you get from lows moving more air through the magnet.
