Idiots on youtube open the can in their parent's basement and gag and puke and put on a show. You're meant to open it outdoors, puncture the can first because it's fermented and pressurized, and then prep it in a dish like you would any other meat, from what I've seen in videos. I bet it's delicious when it's done right.

Here's my rating:

Brunswick - kind of tasteless, soggy
King Oscar - good middle of the road, but a bit oily
Bar Harbor - they have two varieties - one more smoky and the other peppery. Either of them is the best of the three brands I have access to; only thing is the can is larger, more than I want for a single serving, so I have to put the half eaten can in a ziplock bag in the fridge for tomorrow.

Don’t remember the show, but Lutefisk was mentioned often as in, “what is the secret of the lutefisk?” Which no one was willing to answer. Once the visiting inspector sat down to a plate of lutefisk, a local revealed the secret of the lutefisk, “don’t eat the lutefisk.” Advice I have followed to this day.
I’ve never enjoyed any aquatic critter from a can beyond salmon, so I can’t speak to the taste, because the smell is enough to gag me and except for canned water creatures, I have a robust digestive system and have indulged in exotic foods the world over, but cracking a tin of kippered snacks to eat has never crossed my mind.
