And I agree with both of you. While we can all make our own decisions, we cannot change the behavior of others: a guitarist with 2x 100w Marshall stacks, or even a turned up Twin Reverb, some of which I've felt are even louder than a Marshall stack.

I admit that while never needing more that 200 watts SS, I have more often than not been blessed to perform with musicians who understand ensemble sound quality. Even in punk bands the lead guitarist was satisfied with a 50w Marshall 1/2 stack. We've gotten quite loud - but by that I mean loud enough, not too damn loud. If you're dealing with metal guitar god who goes through the throes of orgasm while using his tuner, well, guess you need more headroom, but - unless you're playing a really big room - I wonder what the resulting sonic stew sounds like and kinda feel for the comfort of your audience.

Well duh... everybody knows the most evil watts don't get used until the last 5% of the volume knob... :D

Well I don't usually have to deal with Two Stack Sam or Double Kick Dan, but running across 40 ft stages is a fairly common occurrence. But you're right...I would want an SVT/810 in those heavier situations. Don't need 1000w, though.
