Kind of a grandfather of punk -- or a distant uncle if you will (see what I did there?) -- but Brian Turrington's bass on the intro to Brian Eno's 1974 tune "Third Uncle" always struck me as the ultimate punk rock attitude/minimalism:

 

Okay, maybe not "punk" these days.. but whatabout Longview from greenday.. one of my faves to test out a P bass.
