Put Chromes on... took ‘em off.

I've had Ernie Ball flats on my ESP RB-1005 for a couple of months now. I had a set of new Chromes laying around, and I thought maybe I would try them. I figured the .135 B string might be better.

You know how they say that Chromes are pretty bright compared to other flats? Turns out that wasn't what I was looking for. Also, the B string was pretty indistinct. I tried them at church and at a band practice, and decided to put the Ernies back on.

Much happier now with the EB's back on. I'm looking for mostly a Motown-ish sound, which these strings provide. These are the "regular" flats, not Slinky/cobalt.

Interesting! I don't have any experience with the Ernie Ball Group x strings and it's been several years since I've played Chromes, but last discussion I heard was that they were pretty similar.

Oh well, I'm glad you have found your strings. Stinks to have taken a chance on a $50 experiment.

I have a set of Chromes on an Essex Jazz bass, and they've probably been on there 10 years. Still a little brighter than you'd expect. I'm pretty convinced on these Ernies.

I've not tried regular EB flats but I don't care for the Cobalt flats. I keep putting them on different basses and just do not like the sound.

I find them to be pretty "traditional" sounding. I tend to cut highs and lows a bit so the midrange shines through, but these are nice, thumpy strings with good definition. Brighter than the old Dean Markley flats (almost everything was brighter than those), but without the twang of Chromes. Not like LaBellas either, which seem to have their own midrange thing happening.

Both 130B from EB Cobalt flat and Group flat has great clarity and defination than others 5 string flatwound set i been use/try.
Those B and E string just has same tonal as ADG string. No Muddy,No Bommy, No Lifeless.....
