I have a few originals from the era - a v6 Civil War, a Tall Font and a Bubble.
In order to get them to work in a mix, you really do need a mids boost on a modern muff. Only really the Civil War manages to kinda cut through because it's the least scooped of the three.
my favorite modern production muffs are the Broughton Pi (based on my personal favorite bubble font muff with the most crushing low end I have ever heard); COG Effects Grand Tarkin (more Civil War based than tall font but we are splitting hairs here); and the Stomp Under Foot Civil Unrest.
I would not buy a modern muff without a mids dial. And I am sorry but JHS continues and probably always will turn my stomach.

Wren & cuff has never failed me, I used my Tall Font Russian for years and still love it, just now resides on my guitar board as I don't use dirty bass as often.
The ARC Effects Big Green is incredible. Wish I had one! I saw one of the original ones is for sale on The Gear Page.
Aside from MAYBE wanting to fit a Russian Muff or a clone, I think this or that is the final layout.

Agreed on the mids boost. I had the SUF Civil War but replaced it with a W&C Super Russian (TFR with flat mids and 'creamy dreamer' mods, plus separate boost). You can also get the TFR with these mods through W&C's custom shop. I'd highly recommend checking that out. I have one on the way to replace the bigger SR, as I don't need the SR's boost.
Added the Mooer Sweeper. Much more useful to me than the Bassballs was, the only problem is a huge volume spike when the fuzz is on unless I keep the intensity down. So I stuck it in the volume Looper with the B:ASSMASTER. Not ideal but I'm not sure how else to control it.

I'm still waiting on the Always On HPF, Edison and Particle Accelerator but this is what my board is looking like at the moment:
Once I get those on the board I'll start going full OCD with matching cables and making it clean underneath with some cable ties. I also need to invest in some pedal toppers so I can actually use this board with shoes on.

Current config of my studio board;
SolidGoldFX Imperial BC183 is another great Muff for bass. Greg from SGFX told me it's based more on a Ram's Head than Green or Civil War, but it has the all-important mid switch, and a nice JFET stage that makes it very usable throughout the gain range.
I hope you dig the Edison. I'm a huge fan of it. I put a Tesla tube in mine for a more flat, natural response (as suggested by the builder) and it's an always on pedal, which is something I've never had before.
It will be an always on pedal for me as well. At least that's the plan. It will play with the SV-Pre and PDR as my clean signal and feed tube dynamics into my dirt. Can't wait!
What have I been doing while on break during the coronavirus restrictions? Building my first pedalboard! I've been collecting and messing around with pedals for a couple of years, but have never used them in my band or any of the basement jam sessions I play in. But I decided this was a good time to finally put it all together.
I've done a lot of swapping pedals in and out while playing through my band's full song list plus all the songs we've talked about working on while we're shutdown. With an occasional tweak, this particular configuration has been pretty stable for a while and covers my needs really well for what my band plays. I also have some other effects I could add if there's a need for them later on, but I have no idea where they'd go or what I'd take off to make room. I also have several other ODs that I'm keeping so I can rotate them on and off, based on actual need or just on mood/whim.
Can't wait to start rehearsing and playing again so I can try it out for real. Just don't know when that will be.

Tore down my PT Jr. in anticipation of my Novo 24 arriving tomorrow and then got notice the C4 and MS60B had arrived so I tossed this together for lols but holy hell, this is synth city. I run the outputs of the Mimiq through that Y cable and straight into my headphones and get an awesome stereo sound with it.
Swap out the Mimiq for something to change presets on the MS and C4 and this would be an absolutely gig-worthy board for a lot of purposes. I could also see dropping the Mimiq for a dedicated drive if I only needed a couple preset patches on the MS and C4.
I'll be wiring up the Novo with this stuff plus a lot more on Wednesday, but this little bunch is a lot of fun.
