PYPB 44: ...like Tetris with boxes, wires and cables

IMG_1030.jpg

It's pseudo-final... but after the Christmas debit card cools off, I may swap the dispatch master for something else in modulation-land. The top board is my bass grab n go board... the bottom board is my guitar 'fun' board. I never gig on guitar, really only bass, but I like to make weird noises from time to time.

Some (big) changes on my board for 2022:
  1. New power supply because I run out of outputs on my old one as two pedals required current double cables. Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 3 works flawlessly. :)
  2. Source Audio Aftershock replaced my trusty Boss ODB-3. I am still looking for a setting for 1:1 match with ODB-3, but I'm getting closer. Other than that, it covers a lot of different kinds of "dirt".
  3. MXR M81 bass preamp replaced the Boss OC-2. Two octavers were overkill really, although I really did use both, even in the same song (not at the same time obviously :) ). I was torn between the OC-2 and Octamizer, and decided to leave the Octamizer because it tracks better and covers more sonic ground. The MXR preamp is really clean, and I love how I it subtly improves my sound by slightly boosting the bass, low mids, and slightly cutting the treble. Wonderful!!!
  4. Boss FS-7 for scrolling through the MS-3 banks.

Oh yes, I had a lot of time to experiment with Boss MS-3 and it is great piece of kit. I originally wanted something that will let me control the Deep Impact with the expression pedal, and after spending a lot time investigating, I decided that MS-3 fits my needs perfectly. It controls the Future Impact with MIDI, and I have the distortion, octaver and low-pass filter in loops. This gives me almost a full control in creating different presets, and I even put to use some if it's internal effects.
The only thing I miss in MS-3 is ability to change the order of the loops (they are hardwired in series), but it's really not a dealbreaker.

Also, changing the banks by pressing switches 1 & 2 for down, and 3 & 4 for up proved to be a bad idea becase I would often press two switches when I only wanted to activate one preset. So Boss FS-7 switch to the rescue :). It didn't fit on the pedalboard so I carry it in the case and I have to plug it every time. I applied some Velcro on the pedalboard and the footswitch so it doesn't move and that actually works fine.

Been looking multiple times at a MS3 for my bigger board. Do you find that you use it primarily as a switcher or do you also integrate the onboard effects in your patches? Had a HX stomp for a while and never quite bonded with the effects vs. pedals.

Both actually :). The primary function is a switcher (loops & MIDI), but I may combine them with the internal effects - Sometimes octaver needs some EQ. Maybe I need to compress something to death. Maybe I need to add some chorus to low-passed octaver in some part of the song. Some of the drives sound good (I managed to create an convincing sound for Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better). I even have to admit that the OC-2 emulation is very good, it sounds 95% of original, but it's more 2D compared to the real thing.
I realized that it is far cheaper to use MS-3 chorus for example than having a separate pedal on my board and use it for a single song.

There is so much staff I can do with it, and it's so usable and simple (once you read the manual).

At the end, I don't think that MS-3 is a great multi-effect, there are probably better options there. But as a switcher with additional effects, I don't see anything else that even compares.

First full board build in two years! This thing is insane. I documented the entire build process for anyone interested.

Thank you. This is the kind of nerded-out pedalboard stuff I live for...awesome.

One question (others will come): Any need/desire for a way to kill all effects in one shot to go straight dry signal in scenarios where you have 3+ pedals on at once and don't want to tap dance?

What's that Yella Fella?

OmniCabSim. I only know because I’ve asked the same question.
Yup. I traded for it here. Omnicabsim Deluxe without the DI built as a clone by a custom builder. I forget who off hand and I am not sure they make them in general. If the actual Omnicabsim works as well as this I would highly recommend it as an analog solution to cabsims.

So my main pedalboard before this used a switching system for just that purpose. When I was playing live and doing similar sets night after night, that made sense. But for this build it's intention is to be on a table top manipulated with my hands. I am treating this board more like a modular synth than a traditional pedalboard. Lots of live looping, sound design, sequencing, e.t.c. So I don't have as big of a need to turn things off quickly.

Makes sense - your previous boards/reviews resulted in me buying a lot of pedals. Was just curious on this new one. I know you mentioned the table top setup in the start of the video, but wasn't sure if you've been doing live/band stuff where the 'kill-effects' function would be needed. Anyway - cool hearing you walk through the cabling, mounting, layout, etc. Excited to see the second part!

I threw in the towel on modulation/reverb/etc. Too many rabbit holes to try and make one part of our one “not ragingly loud” song more “interesting.” Instead, what we have here is all the gain. Longsword is always on, just makes whatever you run after sound that much better. Alternating between the Vitriol and Muff depending on the song. Really like that Op-Amp Muff with the tone bypass. It gives you that thunderous fuzz without softening the attack. Way more articulate than the other Muff fuzzes I’ve tried. And I’m all about fewer knobs—less room for me to second guess myself.
