Sadly, I never heard back from the painter. He changed commands, went on a 6-month deployment, and most likely completely forgot about it as well.
To tell you the truth, until I saw this pop up, I had forgotten as well. I guess I'll send him an email and see what's up.

Love the tone! Wired it up VVT with a series/parallel swich, and replaced the MIM Fender Pickup with a Dimarzio Model P.

I emailed Steve and asked him what was going on - he's still deployed, somewhere in the Middle East - Med or Gulf, I'm not really sure.
He says it's his top priority when he gets back, but I told him not to sweat it... Too much... I'll get it when I get it.
This gives me plenty of time to re-acquire parts for the bass, anyway. Sold most of everything off a long time ago.

:shrug: I may put out a feeler on the local CL for artists to paint it. :sigh: I was hoping it would pan out, though. It's been 3 years!

Yeah, waiting years without any progress has got to be maddening, hopefully it works out for you.
Oh, I'm definitely going to finish it. At this point, technically speaking, I've owned this bass longer than just about every other bass I've owned, lol.
The thing is, I'm pretty good with finishing - spraying, wet-sanding, all of that - but that's pretty much the extent of my visual arts abilities.
So do I pay someone to paint it with the Python theme - which is probably gonna be pricey, as well as letting it go again - or do I just finish it in a solid color, or what?
I'm open to any ideas - there's no rush at all, lol.

That just isn't gonna work for me... I have an idea brewing, I'll update this when the cats and dogs stop falling from the skies for a day or two...
Okay, so I'm thinking something somewhat steampunk. I'm going to do layout this afternoon, but the humidity is too high and the temperature too low to actually shoot.

Made some progress today after all... Bear in mind that this is a "spare" bass, in that I just want to screw around and see if I can come up with something cool. This, to me, is pretty cool. Also, it's not supposed to be perfect - some of the lines are not quite straight, the dots aren't perfect circles, I'm giving this guy character.
A few coats of various bronze-ish paints, some flat black spatter, etc...
(The variations and whatnot are more or less intentional)
And headstock:
Then I used acrylic paint and paintbrushes to make random "plate" outlines, and dots for the "rivets":
And the headstock - I got started with "aging" the "plates" on the headstock. Still got more to do, though:
And then gold "heads" for the "rivets", for more contrast:
And the headstock:
I'll let this sit overnight, pick up some flat green paint tomorrow, and really age (I like to think I'm just giving it a bit of patina) the rest of the body and add a little something to the headstock.
Gotta think of a name, so I can Photoshop up a logo of some sort.
Also, it's going to have a basic black pickguard, but I'll do something cool with the pickups. I'm going to configure it V/V/T, with a jack on the side.
Some will like it better than the "Python" concept from 3 years ago, some won't, but I'm diggin' it.

I like it. It's got style.
Hurt my back last night somehow, and called in sick to work today. Sat on the couch with heating pad and paintbrushes, and came up with this:
I'm gonna wait till Friday to order the parts, but they'll be all black. Black standard pickguard, may decide to dress it up, might not...
Definitely giving the front pickup the look, probably gonna leave the rear pup alone.
Now, to design a logo... I'm thinking I'll name it "Anachronism".

Starting the clearcoat today. Using polyurethane, I can imagine this will take dozens of coats to build up over the uneven paint, so expect not to see any updates for a while.
I will be ordering parts on Friday, though.
