I am looking to buy a new bass. I have been playing for 2 years. I want something better than my Epiphone SG, EB-3. I can't decide between the fender Aerodyne or the Ibanez SR-500 (I haven't played the Ibanez SR-700 but it is also an option). The Aerodyne and the SR-500 are looking like $500. The SR-700 looks to be around $700.

About me: I play with a pick, don't hate. I feel like the Ibanez basses might be less suitable for picking than the Aerodyne. I would appreciate it if anyone has any experience with these basses.

But seriously, I love those SG type basses so don't get rid of it. In the right format they are awesome. What kind of sound are you trying to get out of your bass? I Don't have a whole lot of expierence with eithero f those aparticular models. I like Fenders as a rule, and I dig Ibanez necks in general, but they do nothing for me. Just for future posters who might know more about those specific basses, what kind of specific sound and requirements do you feel you need? What about these basses do you like and dislike? Also, what about the Epi do you want to improve upon in your next bass?

And for what its worth, I doubt the aerodyne would be less suitable for picking, but that's jsut my opinion.

i play with a pick too and the one thing i noticed is that if the controls are too close to the strings it annoys me. for example i had a fender jazz bass and some times i would hit the volume knob, but my p bass had two knobs positioned on the lower part of the body and works great. i got rid of the jazz for that very reason. both of the basses you are considering have control clusters pretty close to the G. closer than your SG? if you like your SG why not just get the Gibson version?

I love to play with distortion effects and my drummer friend fo for the "drums and bass only" thing quite a lot. I like punchy bass with bright tone. But then again I loved the range I got from the Ibanez the other day at the store.

Mostly I just want a higher quality bass. And I'm not getting rid of the Epi, I like her too.

The ibanez sr500 is quite a punchy bass i n my opinion. The only differance between the sr500 and sr700 is the quilted maple top and $200. The maple top is not that thick so it's basically just for looks and doesn't really add to the tone. Hope this helps.
