I think this explanation from SuperDuck on 19 September 2002 explains carrots as best as it could be explained:

People also seem to want to use it to say "That was stupid" or "This is a dumb topic and deserves a dumb answer." or "Everyone seems to be saying 'carrots' and I desperately want to be accepted in this odd, odd culture, so I, too, will say carrots."

These threads made him epic.

You have to remember that this was several years ago, there were a lot fewer people here so the community was much closer.

There has been much speculation on who really is the Qintar. It is generally accepted that Digme (Brad Cook) is the Qintar, though he denies it. There have been megathreads created on finding the real Qintar, they are all in the Lobby so you might not be able to see them.

Also, search for a thread which Digme created about a fence that The Qintar supposedly created. That was an epic thread.
