Double Bass qsc k10/dpa/headway

Ric, in previous posts I believe you have waxed poetic about the EAP (as have many others). I just wondered if your DPA>Headway>QSC is your first choice when you are able to use that? (Your profile doesn't show the DPA QSC but maybe you just haven't updated it recently.) For the price I have not been that impressed with the EAP - having heard clips and hearing it live thru a new Flex-Pre system. There is just nothing, it seems to me like a mic and a great speaker like the QSC. I currently have the Lifeline which I am quite happy with but for quiter gigs if I could get that 'studio sound' by using the DPA>Headway>QSC I would be tempted to part with the cash.

Consider the Troll ribbon microphone. I think it sounds a bit more natural and has slightly better feedback rejection.

Thanks Nathan. Do you have, or know of any (good) sound clips with the Troll? Also, I know it's in the threads here somewhere but how do I find out about ordering one?

Pm BrandonEssex for sound clips and ordering info. I'm away right now but plan to capture some decent recording with the Troll when I get back. Of course I've been saying that since November so take it for what it is worth. Brandon will be faster guaranteed.

The DPA 4099B>Headway>QSC K8 is a perfectly good option, but it will feedback sooner than the Ehrlund EAP, or the Realist Lifeline. I would agree with you that the recent price jump for the EAP, and it's Pre Amp make it a far less affordable option, especially if you aren't convinced that it's the sound your looking for.
From my perspective, it's literally impossible to get the "studio sound" on a live gig, with out the benefit of a sound engineer mixing what goes to the house and even then it's a tricky proposition at best. But that's just one guys opinion. I tried it with the Realist, DPA 4099B combination, through the Headway EDB-1 into my Walter Woods amps with mixed results, usually resulting in less usable volume and more feedback. So that's my observation. Incidentally, none of the clips of the Ehrlund on Goran's own site sound anything like the pickup does on my bass.
If I were going for a blended sound with the Realist Life Line, I'd borrow someones DPA 4099B and take it out on some gig's to see how the combination works.

Thanks for the info and the details in the PM. Last night was the first night on a gig with my new Shen 7/8 Willow. Bass sounded great - it seemed I could have 'almost' played acoustically. I was very pleasantly surprised at how nice my AT Pro-35 sounded thru the house PA - one of those wierd Bose tower things with the sub-woofer. I ran the mic into my ART pre for the phantom power and ran a 1/4" line level to the PA. That way I had a volume level close by. I ran the Lifeline thru my amp (my TC BG250 on a stand) on the other side of me. The guitar player really enjoyed hearing bass on both sides of him. At one point my amp was off and I didn't realize it at first since I was hearing the PA which was only a few feet away. I was less happy with my pickup thru the amp - but that may have been because it was about 18" up on a stand and lost the floor effect. In my studio at home the Lifeline sounds Great thru the amp - but that's been with the amp on the floor. All in all a very fun promising night with the new bass and made it an easy decision to keep the Pro-35 for now. I'm sure the DPA will be a nice upgrade down the line. I'll add that to my GAS list along with a new Pre and probably a QSC k-10. Bottom line: I enjoyed playing music last night and that's what it's all about. The guitarist said my bass sounded fantastic (nice to hear and I expect that's 90% due to the bass itself and only 10% due to the amplification).
