qsc ksub paired with a jbl prxlf

Bad idea? We currently run 1 prx sub with the 12" prx tops. Seems like another sub would be the jam, but money is tight. the used ksub is about half the price of a new prxlf, so I'm wondering if we could pull it off with good results.

Probably not a good idea. It is unlikely that the crossovers and efficiencies are going to line up well. If you have enough sends, you could send the k-sub a dedicated send and then turn it up slowly and listen to the low end. If it begins to become distinct, then back it off. Personally, not something I would bother with.

Only time I've seen mismatched subs work was when there was a stereo pair stage left an d right and the odd-ball was used in the center. That one was the more powerful of the three and it was run off a dedicated mono send. The sub was a powered 1x18 JBL, built in x-over. That setup was killin'. Mostly because the sound guy has his act together and a great set of ears. In the right hands, things are possible which in the hands of mere mortals would be a tall order.

+1 to not mixing subs (it's the same reason you don't want to mix bass cabs), and +1 also to needing "good" subs to keep up with "average" tops.

well the cross over points are generally different, and the drivers used are different, therefore a different sound. not to also mention that they will also perform differently. this will affect greatly the sound of your overall system no matter if they sound good together.

could give you problems from phasing, cone filtering, to feedback issues.

my advice still stands in that they need to be of the same brand/model. (and as it seems everyone else agrees). maybe in a pinch of limping through a night, but not to buy as part of your PA system. Please don't give bad advice...
