QSC or Crest Poll

Do you prefer QSC or Crest for a Poweramp in your Bass Rig?

I voted QSC because even though I don't always see exactly eye to eye with Bob Lee, I am grateful for his constant presence here and the fact that if I ever had a problem with a QSC amp I feel certain Bob would help me resolve it. Crest makes great amps but I've never once seen a Crest representative here.

I have owned power amps from QSC, Crown, and Peavey. All of them have been quite good but...

I have 3 reasons for picking QSC.

I chose QSC becuase I have had a dozen + of them over the last 5 years (PLX ,RMX and recently a GX5 model ) all of them have been great performers, excellent values, durable and trouble free. They became the primary amp in all of my PA systems and I eventually ended up with all QSC PLX and RMX amps and a couple of Crowns that would have been replaced with QSC PLX models when it came time to retire them .

The Bob Lee factor is the second reason. He is a regular poster here on talkbass and adds to the support of their products.

QSC gives you a six year warranty. Crest doesn't do that.

I would bet that in a well set up, double blind listening test, 90% of us would not be able to hear a discernable difference; and if you did hear a difference it would just be "different" and not better. Both are quality products.

Was part of a test in a twin 24 track recording studio 15 years ago and it was a struggle to hear that much difference. Do remember that the QSC sounded slightly better than an ancient Crown DC300.

Go with reliability, weight, waranty, and highly consider that someone associated with QSC is really interesteded in helping folks on an internet board. That's way cool in my book.

Do you not see eye-to-eye with Bob on issues pertinent to amplification, or unrelated topics?

I ran a Trace 1818 with the QSC before I changed up my rig. Personally, I thought it was fine. I now use the Crest to run a Bergantino NV215 and the QSC runs two Acme B2's. It was tempting to simply get another QSC for the Berg but after reading such glowing reviews of the Crest I got one.

Quite honestly, I could hear a bigger difference in upgrading my cables then I did in changing amps. Not a knock on either. Like I said, they are both fine amps.

I have two PLX 3402s, two PLX 2402s and a PLX 1602, and they've never had a single issue. I used to have a MX1500a that was a workhorse for over 10 years, and I sold it to a friend who has used it for at least five years, and it's still going strong.

Each one of these racks weighs less than 50 pounds. That's 9,800 watts at under 100 pounds (amps alone weight 84 pounds).

His shoes are like so totally out of fashion.

No it's just that I'm a student of electronics and he's a veteran of the industry, and sometimes one of us says things that are not quite in line with what the other one believes, or one of us says something terse on the subject and the other interprets it wrongly, etc. Sometimes I think he's a bit hidebound with certain ideas, and 'who knows' what he may think of my statements, or if he even remembers who I am from one thread to the next. :D In dialog we sometimes disagree or get grumpy at each other, but at root I respect his experience.
