This may be one of those things that can't be explained by engineers. What makes a Stradivarius so special? Engineers have been trying to unravel that mystery for a very long time. Not eveything can be measured, quantified and assigned a set of numbers. How do you measure feel on an oscilloscope? The engineer crunches the numbers and says...well they're identical so they must be the same. Meanwhile, the artist is telling him...no man, they're different as night and day. Can't you feel it?

It's something that can be identified, and if it can be identified, it can be applied, manipulated, refined, etc. It's not necessarily about numbers, but also patterns, characteristics, etc.

The whole engineer versus artist conflict is a red herring. Stradivari abviously learned and knew something about making violins; they didn't just happen magically because he was who he was. The men who invented and developed the piano obviously had supreme technical skills that they put to the service of art; don't discount that music involves a partnership between technology and art. An engineer like the one you describe would be doing a very poor job.

Did you actually read what Bob wrote? His point is, if there's any difference in "feel" then there will be a distinct, measurable difference at the amp output.

Seems like we got a couple of guys who totally discount anything other than cold, hard facts.

Um...since we have yet to be able to quantify absolutely everything about anything I would like to point out that all of the cold, hard facts aren't in yet.

But then you don't want to hear that, do you?

How does audio fit into "everything about anything?" Are you saying that audio technology is an unknowable mystery, Joe?
