I'm about to pick up a jazz bass and don't know anything about amplifier companies and who makes quality products. I played the electric guitar for about 5 years and am trying out the bass now, and was wondering what qualities to look for in a bass amp and what names tend to be good. My price limit is probably a couple hundred (~200) and it just needs to be a good practice amp, obviously wont be doing shows with it or anything. Thanks a lot!

If you are just practicing, why not get a headphone amp, or an iRig, something like that?

I will be just practicing, but I don't exactly want to get a complete cheapy thing with no room for improvement! I want to get at least something with a good speaker on it so I can jam for hours once I learn without having headphones on. It will be a "practice amp", but it will also be my only amp.
I love the tone of Orange amps but they're not very versatile IME, they have a distinct sound that you can't change.
Right on.. do you have any particular model peavey makes that would make a good beginner amp for me?

Back to OP's question, it would be best to get something like a headphone amp. I've heard only good things about the Vox Amplug Bass. Save your money so you can get a good rig down the line once you know what tone you dig.
The MAX series is decent. Simply get the biggest one you can afford. Probably the 110?
I have a small Peavey Minx (2 actually), that is 35 watts with a 110, but I leave a Basic 112 at our practice site that I would suggest if it is your only amp ... two guitars with cubes, a piano with a Behringer and a drummer and it keeps up just fine .. not even cranking and usually with just one of my Squier Jazz's with Chromes ... very loud 60+ watts and you couldn't ask for more reliable ... I borrowed it out one time and it did a couple weekends for a keyboard player and came back with everything set on 10!! ... I paid $100 for it ... you can find TNT's, etc if you want more power, still under your $200 ... there have been some good reviews on here also for the new Acoustic brand combos, and I think you can get them in your price range ... I was in a local pawn shop (MN) last week and saw an Ampeg BA-210SP for $199, so there are good amps out there in your range, but again, better bang to buy used ... feel free to run what you see across here and you will get some good feedback ... JMHO
