Double Bass Quality of various extensions

I know you mentioned Kriegel and that you may not be a big fan of the aesthetics but I am very happy with mine and know at least 3 others who are as well. It's the only extension I have lived with but have played a few other basses with others and it seems to be one of the better ones out there. Nothing but good things to say about Jed's work.

I actually wrote him a while back and asked if he could do the work with just my neck. Alas, he needs the whole thing. I seem to recall it not being solid black. Maybe he can change that. If he could soften the lines a bit and maybe moved to Europe I would be sold. I have sat next to one for a week, but I do not recall if the surface twists or not. I can live without that, but it would be nice.

As far as tuning, it needs to be fully tunable. Tuning issues I have had over the years includes an out of tune Db on a bass due to an Ab wolf. Another issue was the E stop being too far south causing every note on the E to be to far south in relation to the A.

Ahh I see, his are fully tunable, the C nut isn't as tunable as the rest of it but its just glued in like a normal nut but has a bit of room to be moved if need be, every other gate is tunable.I guess non of this matters if you can't get the bass to the US (I'm assuming you aren't in the US??)

It is all black other than the back is black carbon fibre and the screws that hold the gates on are blue, but its very subtle, heres some pictures of my extension if it helps understand the shape of everything.

Does the surface twist towards the player as it goes down?
I can go to the US, but I try not to fly with this bass as I have broken three necks so far while flying. Better to fly him here presuming his neck is safer than my basses have been in transit.

Thanks for the picks. Maybe I could have him make the back black too. Being picky, I know.

Not sure what you mean by the twist you are talking about. It is matched to the same radius on the fingerboard if thats what you mean, It isn't just a flat piece.

Ahh i see, I think I would have to see a robertson's extension in person to be sure but maybe this picture angle will answer that for you?

Very helpful. Yours is so angled it does not need a twist I see. Very nice.

I need to make some calls to see if more players in sweden/denmark need one and want split the cost of a little EU trip for Mr. Kriegel. How easy does it come off?

Very easily, is held on only with tension and theres just a pin that goes into the top of the FB. I also had my removable neck done with Jed and when I travel all I have to do is loosen tension and pull it upwards and it slides right off.

I have a Fawcett style mechanical extension made by Pete Barnaby and fitted by Martyn Bailey, who tuned it when he fitted it. Has a tunable brass nut for the bottom C and works beautifully. Smooth and quiet. The only noise I get from it is down to my clumsiness. The E lock takes about half a second to release or lock and overall its an absolute pleasure to use. The machining and the mahogany mount are works of art too...

I have had a Fawcett on a Martin bass I used to own and I have sat next to them while doing trials in the UK. They can be played very quietly, but I did not fully master it before the extension litterally broke and had to come off. There are times when I would love to have one again, but there is a reason why they are disappearing from even the London scene.
If I get Kriegels removable extension, I may talk to him about also making a removable Fawcett, if that is even possible. Being able to swap out would be interesting. I could have really used it two weeks ago.
The best part of the Fawcett is that it has the best sounding stopped note of anything I have played. However, there is no way I would have one permanently on my main bass for reasons too numerous to list here.
