Double Bass QUALITY

Seeing what doesn't work gives us an opportunity to look at examples of what does. I will never have a C extension on my own bass, but could we have some photos from a few of you illustrating some nifty C extensions that work and a few words on why the design and workmanship makes them a better mousetrap? Have their makers gotten completely away from cutting away part of the scroll to install these things?

I think that would be extremely helpful.

It's only slander if it's not true

I'm no Lawyer but I was once told that is is Slander either way. As long as it hurts the business or reputation, it is slander.

I know who supplied that extension. I also know Jeff. many Luthiers are laughing under their breath about this thread because it's on the edge!

I don't think who made it is as important as what it is. There are many ideas of extensions out there and I will show a few in my next post. I don't know how to do double quotes so I will just come back in a sec.. ok?

It's not slander if it's true--otherwise, let's say I dump toxic waste in the river. You publicly call me a guy who dumps toxic waste in the river. Under what possible code of laws would that be slander? If it were, then it would simply be impossible to make any public criticisms, whether deserved or not. I, the toxic dumper, could sue you for slander, but I'd lose. Otherwise, convicted murderers could sue the witnesses for slander.

If you knowingly pass false information and it's proven to cause harm you MIGHT be guilty of slander, but you have to know it's false, and you have to do it with malice. If someone says "I heard PB+J dumped toxic waste in the river" it's not slander unless they know it to be false and they act with demonstrable malice

It's not slander if it's the truth. Did X attatch a c-extension with a big goober of crazy glue? Yes. Saying so is not slander, it's a statement of fact.

In one word...bad.

I love to look at pictures of all the extensions I can, I haven't been heavy into them...but I notice that the brass hardware is just about always the same even though the wood working bit changes from luthier to luthier. So guys...what am I missing??? Leads? Sources? Help a brother out!

Do you have any specific questions about x-10-shuns? I don't have any good pics of mine but I have some ideas and I am sure Arnold would chime in as well.

Well, my post was deleted regarding using Google to figure out who was the luthier. As it turns out, doing so was of little use because of a mis-spelling in the original post. That's all I'll say. I understand wanting to keep these threads to the high road but I think individuals should be allowed to express opinions good or bad, if such are based on fact. I doubt it's a legal issue. No, I'm not a lawyer but I can't imagine someone successfully bringing suit against TB because an individual, private user said something slanderous-- even if it was actually slander. I also can't imagine that any of us wants to have this site degenerate into a mud-slinging forum and the moderators are right to keep things as cordial and as decorous as possible. That being said, beware the slippery slope of censorship.

Sorry to crash the party, but I'm going to close this thread, not because I'm afraid of being sued (which, btw, is a real threat, and I've gotten plenty over the last 8 years), but because of the nature of the thread.

Jeff, I know you had the highest of intententions for posting this and are not out to cause trouble. However I think it sets a very bad precedent on TalkBass to have one luthier speaking poorly of the work of another in the business. I'm not saying you were out to "diss your competitor", but in a general sense, looking towards the future, this puts TB in the wrong direction IMO.

I'm not out to censor TB'ers. It is certainly not my intent to squash negative opinions, complaints etc. TalkBass is NOT about being peachy and positive about everything all the time. However, for a complaint to 'work', I think it needs to:
- be posted by a user who is not 'commercial', in the same business
- be up-front and honest about who the complaint is referring to, 100% factual, etc. Ideally, the affected entity would be invited to respond to any evidence and accusations put forward. In this case I do not believe that dancing around the name of the affected party is fair to them. The affected party will most likely never see this thread that is slamming them, which is a bad thing IMO. Most serious bass players will 'discover' the name of the shop this thread is describing - and I guess I don't think this is the right way to go about it.
