Question about 70's pickup placement...

I tried doing a search on this topic but couldn't find an answer to my question.

I really prefer "round" sounding jazz basses tones, and I'm not very found of the very trebly and aggressive ones. Problem is I really like the way the jb classic 70's looks, compared to the classic 60's which looks rather bland to me (the 60s is also pricier).

So my question is : in my case, is the 70s pickup placement a deal breaker or is it something that has negligible effect and can be easily negated with some eq'ing ?

The 70s spacing is not more "trebly" than the 60s spacing. I don't know that it is really more aggressive either. The 70s spacing does have less high mid clank and a stronger low mid presence than the 60s spacing, due to the the difference phase cancellation properties between the two. I like a round tone too, and I prefer 70s spacing. In fact, I could never get a tone I really liked with both pickups open on a Jazz with 60s spacing. When I got my first 70s spaced bass it was a real eye-opener to me. It was like, ah this is what a Jazz is supposed to sound like!
