A friend of mine has a “what he claims to be “ 1964 ish Fender Precision Bass .
Would any of you peeps believe this to be correct?
I’m questioning the decal on the headstock foremost .
And 1964 is when the P Bass switched to “pearl” position markers. Right?Shouldn't that have a hootenanny button on the back of the headstock?

And should have 4 strings IIRC.'64 was the transition year and even in '65 some Fenders received necks that were completed or partly made in '64 with clay dots.
//obvious refin, poorly positioned (and wrong) repro decal, and non-original pickguard.

No that was 1965.And 1964 is when the P Bass switched to “pearl” position markers. Right?
So based on these photos I agree with the consensus here that it could be but it's not enough to confirm, and either way it's been refinished and the logo is aftermarket.View attachment 5002558 View attachment 5002559 View attachment 5002560

Yeah, just say it's a "xx" neck on whatever body, etc. Bobby Vega, for example, has a mutt P-bass body (I think a 71) with a Jazz neck on it (I think a 66) and he just says what it is.Yes its a complete refin, and lots of replacement parts.
However, from here the only thing that looks correct is the neck wood. When a body is painted a solid color, can't tell if its an original body, or even a Fender for that matter. All of the parts screwed to that body look like replacement items.
I hate when people have these mutts and say thay have a "19xx".
I always say, what's even left of 19xx on said bass?
Yeah, looking at your’s the dot spacing may be ok. Btw, nice bass you have, it’s a beauty.Yeah that's odd, could be the photo angle. Here's one of my '64 for another comparison:
