Question about five strings

Which "original five string bass" would that be? The earliest one I can think of is the Fender Bass V, which came out in 1965 and was tuned E-A-D-G-C (with 15 frets).

+1 = it was indeed the Fender V. Cool bass - bad timing I guess. The "original 5 string bass"? I've read several articles on this and I think Jimmy Johnson had something to do with it when he asked Alembic to make him a 5....and Anthony Jackson had Carl Thompson or Fodera build him a 6 around the same time, so it's hard to know who built the "original" or first bass with a low B. Nathan East was one of the first cats to do a lot of recording with a 5 - I think.

I had a 76 Carl Thompson 5 string many years ago. Don't ask.
