Question about GK heads

I have a question for those with exprience about the GK 1001RB-II and 700RB-II and 2001RB

Do they sound the same as the 2001RB, with just less wattage and minus the gain channel?

I LOVE Justin Chancellor's tone, and I want a sound similar to that. I was watching TOOLbassplayer's clips on YouTube, and his Ric and Jazz bass sound similar to the Wal through the GK...

But, I've heard the 1001RB-II sounds kinda lifeless at lower volumes, so I figured "Maybe the 700RB-II..."

But, I'd like to know, are they all similarly voiced?

Thank you for your help in advance. Much appretiated :bassist:

If I am playing a low volume gig with my 1001RB I make sure to have the -14db pad engaged and turn the gain down a bit, that way I can have the master vol up a bit and still use the boost.

I do small jazz combo gigs with the 1001, my upright and an Accugroove El Whappo cab and it sounds great at very low volumes.

The 1001RB-II really doesn't sound lifeless at low volumes hehe it's the best sounding head I've ever owned and I won't be buying a new one for a very long time I reckon.... but of course, everything sounds better louder!!! :bassist:

I didn't say it was lifeless, I heard it was lifeless at *lower volumes*

I was planning on getting a Neo 412 along with it when I do have the money.. Which might not be for a while. A 16 year old GAS'er in school with no job doesn't make much income. :crying:

Better make sure you have a gig too. With a 4x12 you can play some pretty big rooms and still be way too loud when you decide to be.

I've never played through a Neo 412 but may I make a very humble recommendation hehe as I said earlier in the thread the 1001RB-II is the best sounding head I've ever owned, but I use it through a GK 410RBH and it's also the best sounding cab and rig I've ever owned haha so yeah, good choices going with GK mate :)

Having owned all three heads I think they all have their place. None of them will leave you short for power on the type of gigs I assume most TBers play. Not counting gigging, stadium professionals. I currently am using a 2001. I love it, it has tons of flexibility and it has a huge sound. The 700 produces the classic GK growl much earlier than the 1001 simply because it is a less powerful head. I liked the 1001 but it took me a little more time to dial in my sound compared to the 700 or the 2001.

You really can't go too far off base with any of the 3.

P.S. I use all GK cabs. 2 x 410RBH and 2 x 115RBH. Killer cabinets.

Thanks "Geddyfleaharris" and "joydavidson,"

Yes, I was definitely planning on going active.
My next bass purchase is possible a Spector ReBop 5DLX (I think, I'm not sure, it's used, so I have not much info on it)
And after that is probably gonna be an Ibanez ATK300.

I need some thoughts about the growl at lower volumes in the GK head family.
It's the 700RBII enough to play in mid sized venues?
I'd read here about this heads are more lively at high volumes like tubes do. They not have the clipping problem of SS amps?
Please help me soon... I'd made a reserve of a GK 1001RBii and a GK NEO212

I've never had a problem in getting "growl" out of my 1001RB-II at low volumes, it's the most consistent amp head I've ever owned, buy it ;)

I have only ever owned 1 amp---other than a 20watt little fella that I had originally--and that is my current 1001RB. I've played some big shows and some small ones and have always been happy with it. I put it through a Schroeder 21012 and really like the combo. Not a lot of experience with other gear but my 2 cents nonetheless.

Go for it!:bassist:
